50 things I've done meme continues with item 33. I...

33. I did not punch a doctor in the face yesterday, despite his smarmy, holier than thou attitude, poor consult practice, shit-eating grin and "you could beat me up just by sitting on me" comment. If I were a less in control sort of guy, I'd have ripped his spine out via his neck, reversed it, and shoved it back into him rectally.

Adrenaline-removed details below.

Dr. D really took quite a lot of wind from my sails yesterday regarding my back. I'm more than a little disappointed and dismayed, but I am happy that a fix is available, contrary to my prior concerns that I have no options.

The short form - I have gained back much of my former lost weight - I'm at 364 lbs. Pulse 82, BP 148 / 88 (far higher than my usual 120/80)

BMI is 42, according to my height vs weight, which is in the very [edit: morbidly] obese category - I obviously need to get back on the stick, health-wise. (some shortcomings of this reference)

His bedside manner was lacking in the extreme - said that I was in a lot of trouble, that my spine has some severe damage that needs to be repaired and the rub is I have too much mass to properly operate on me... he can't get down past all of the tissue, (both fat and muscle) to take care of it.

I won't go into his overly condescending talk about weight loss, but the bottom line is that he feels that he can't work on me now... but he'd prefer that I come back to him in a year after I've lost about 100 lbs - then he thinks that he can repair the damage to my spine and fix the nerve short-circuit in my leg. Meanwhile, I'm going to have to suck it up, and just deal with the pain and numbness issues a bit longer... I don't mind getting on a healthy diet and workout regimen.. it's just a shame that his idea of finding a good one is "pick up a magazine" - rather than guiding me to a trainer and / or dietitian as I'd asked.

So, part of my journal is going to be recording and tracking my weight / workouts again - I'm going to resume my points-based WW program on the palmtop, and we'll see if I can get myself into fighting trim at a reasonable and healthy rate.

I will continue to see that doctor until I find a better one - but meanwhile I'm just happy that there is a chance for repair in the future. I'm disappointed that I still haven't gotten a cortisone shot, but there is a chance of one next visit to my general prac.

After much stress at the Doc's, we swung by the local Games Workshop store (right across the street). It was odd to see a store devoted to just mini wargaming, specifically warhammer fantasy, warhamer 40k and lord of the rings miniatures. Apparently the Glen Burnie site is the USA headquarters for the Games Workshop with dozens tables of goodies set up for play. I was surprised to see the one in Annapolis hopping with people - mid-afternoon on a Wednesday... I'd figure everyone that would want to get in on it would be at work or school. I was impressed by the quality of the paint jobs on the armies... a lot of labor of love going on there. BHK and I both really dug the red and yellow lizard men.

We picked up a very late lunch at Lemongrass Too - it was excellent as usual. More tofu with peanut/curry vibe and spicy-sweet green beans.

We were going to check out Be Kind, Rewind - but it was too late. The only showings at the Bowtie were at 3:30 (missed it) and 9:30 (not on a school night!) - So, while we were in the plaza, BHK shoe shopped - she really liked the keen ones... Timberline, venturea, and malibu styles. note to self for future presents!

On our way out of Annapolis we did discovered the ATW man got gussied up for St. Patty's Day (pictures to follow)... and he also has a myspace page ! Lots of pictures that I didn't have of his past exploits - we went inside ATW and got a floor mat... the reciept mentions where to locate him on the web. I've added him as a friend, but he hasn't reciprocated yet.

Dinner was boiled eggs, salad, and leftover veggie taco "meat". good stuff, solid for the end of the day.

As for today - went to work, worked, got on the bus, headed home, wrote a long entry on the ol' PDA.

BHK made some amazingly tasty split pea soup, with chick peas, carrots and cabbage. Lovely for St. Patty's.

Point budget is 35, using the weight watchers points system. I still can't abide weigh-ins and meetings, but the plan has worked for me in the past. Monitoring using the wwcalc program on the palm.

I'll export the results here in the future.

I can bank a few points for the weekend, where I'm pretty sure I'll go over when we dine out.

Misc health info -

10 minute brisk walk to the bus, light level. not worth any points, really.
10 cups water - just healthy.

Researched utility of using company gym during lunch - distinct possibility. 3 bikes, a treadmill and some free weights that might do the trick.
Bring gym clothes, allot 20 min for lunch, 20 for workout, 20 for changing/shower.

March Begins! David spent Friday night at his pal in DC's place, but returned to us this morning... after my shots, we headed out to the Museum of Visionary art w/ BHK and David, and then to Edgar Allan Poe's burial site (and his 13 year old at wedding-time cousin-wife ) at Westminster (little known factoid, BHK was the tour guide to the Poe site, and has keys to the crypt there.)

Most of what was done and seen can be expressed in photos... sadly, you're not supposed to take pics inside. ( I did sneak one with the camera phone , however.) clicking on items below will go to larger images. No ghosts captured at the graveyard, but I had fun doing some more stitching.

My favorite bit was probably the giant bird, nest and mirrored egg outside the museum. The egg glittered like an 8 foot tall disco ball in the setting sun.

To be honest, the interfaith art exhibit didn't do a lot for me... I was more interested in the permanent items, including the kinetic sculptures art cars, and painted screens.

Guy in the green hoodie is David, BHK's cousin - I think he had a nice time with us. BHK managed to dodge my best efforts at capturing her candidly.

We caught up with Larry and Chris after sundown - stopped off at cheeburger cheeburger for frings and shakes! My back was tricking up, so I begged off the jam session- hitting the sack with a heating pad early tonight.

As for president's day, I certainly prefer the original "George W" to the one currently in office.

Ah, the blessing of a Monday off. Added bonus is a hopefully more gentle 4-day week ahead!

Got up, went to get shots... it was pretty crowded due to the holiday. BHK and I both got our appointments out of the way in a reasonable span of time. I'm about 75% through the third Harry Dresden book. It started out a bit weak, but has gained a nice momentum through the middle 50%. I especially like Mike & Charity Carpenter, even though Mike seemed pretty cornball in the first bit of the book.

After the doc, we went off to Annapolis to make use of the Joss gift certificate we got from Adam for Christmas... I was quite in the mood for a little sushi and tempura.

Alas, the curse of DC and its environs struck again. The weather was absolutely beautiful (mid 70s, sunny), and everyone in government (i.e., EVERYONE within a 250 mile radius, or more) had the day off.

No parking and Joss was full to the gills. That worked out to our advantage, as we toured a little bit until we stumbled into Lemongrass Too. The Fried Green Beans were excellent, and I really liked the Pa-Ram Jae (Deep-fried tofu sauteed with yellow curry with rice, veggies and broccoli, topped with peanut sauce) that BHK ordered... my veggie Pad Thai was good, as well. The crispy tofu appetiser was lacking, in comparison, but that might be just due to everything else being so good. We got enough for me to take for lunch tomorrow as leftovers.... double score. Not the sushi I was expecting, but a nice substitution. Really, only the second time I've had Thai since moving from Florida, and this time I was quite pleased.

We opted to walk a bit for a constitutional after our meal - there was a Best Buy next door. I picked up some wipes for my new (Xmas) monitor at home, seeing a sit has already acquired a few Newton / Pyewacket nose-prints. Additionally, we saw Lego Star Wars Trilogy being sold, and in a moment of game-lust, we picked it up. Both BHK and I dig the game, and it's 2-player.... more bonding time for us! (Like we need it).

We headed home at about 3pm... the weather was still gorgeous, but getting a bit cooler. From what I understand, there'll be snow by mid- to end-week... hardly seems possible, but I've seen stranger stuff.

Upon our arrival, it turned out that the in-laws had come over and were kind enough to take down our Christmas lights (they were too high for us to reach without a ladder.)

BHK was still feeling a little cottony, so we spent the rest of the day at home, resting and recovering energy.
I'm surprised... we really haven't eaten much since midday, but it's well after dark now, and neither of us are that hungry. We may have a little nibble in a while, but I suspect it'll be a light dining night.

Bro released from the pokey... just in time for Thanksgiving. I wonder if he'll be in attendance with the Momster and Wilt? Right now he's in in Delray Beach, with plans to be heading for Sebastian soon. I wish him the absolute best of luck. My expectations are low, but hopes are high.

So... Thanksgiving tomorrow... 4 day weekend! Hoody hoo!

Last night, we went to the Annapolis Mall for a lovely date night of Dinner and a Movie... I was feeling a bit like a teenager, as we went to the food court... I got Panda Express while BHK picked up some Chik-fil-a. The place is really starting to spin up for holiday shopping... I fear the crowds will be thick as chilled molasses once Thanksgiving has come and gone.

Beowulf. Entertaining in 3-d... I'm not sure how well it'd hold up in a 2-d theater. That said, I liked it for the most part. I had a few difficulties with the Thicker Dane Accents, especially in regards to Grendel and his mother. I didn't realise that Neil Gaiman was part of the writing process... that would explain some of the more comedic moments of the film, I suspect. The 3-d bits really made it work, additionally, the amount of eye trauma (or threat of same) made me enjoy it more than I thought. The benefit of expecting a total stinker helped, too. I wasn't expecting so much motion capture and the broad range of "fine human detail" to "Shrek" characters so easily mixed.

Almost better than the movie were previews for movies I want to see... some more than others.

Cloverfield - I like giant monster movies, but I'm worried that this one is jumping the shark or pulling snakes on a plane sort of maneuver.. .too much and too little released at the same time... It's not getting my interest so much as it's irritating me. Still... giant monster movie. I'll see it.

I am Legend based on the novel - (Basically The Omega Man... the mutated seem more interesting in this version, though.) From Warner Bros. - "Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable, and man-made. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City and maybe the world. For three years, Neville has faithfully sent out daily radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. But he is not alone. Mutant victims of the plague -- The Infected -- lurk in the shadows... watching Neville's every move... waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Journey 3-D - based on another classic - Journey to the Center of the Earth - I'm a sucker for 3-d Movies, and if it has Dinosaurs and Xenobiology in it... so much the better.

A 3-d version of Gaiman's Coraline - Pretty nifty, and probably very well-suited for the screen. I suspect BHK will enjoy it quite a lot.

National Treasure 2 - I'm looking forward to this one.. especially given my current environs. Plus, Ben Gates must have quite a resource pool after the first movie. I thought for sure that I'd never see a sequel, and I'm glad I'm wrong. I suspect strongly that it won't be a stinker.

Golden Compass - Based on a book series that I've never read. Still... three words: Armored Polar Bears. Seriously, why not just call it "Scotto, come see this movie. We'll buy the corn for you and everything."

Sweeney Todd - We'll see it, but I suspect it won't shine a light as bright as our expectations. Cannibalism, insanity and revenge with a straight-razor on Burton sets should be pretty fun, regardless. We'll see how the singing side of things will go. It's a shame we didn't get to see the stage production back in July, but who knows? Hopefully it'll boost the play's popularity in more venues locally. We were pretty thrilled to see it as a stage play almost right after we'd seen the stage production on DVD.

Friday - Gem show was fairly nifty... I got to fool with a $109,000 aquamarine stone, and ate some tasty dessert with the in-laws and BHK.

Positives : Played with Rocks, Tasty food, Obtained a little knowledge on Lapidary, Got some ideas about what to get BHK as presents, Rock Cutter reminded me of Todd, discovered "sno cone" cut

Negatives: 4-5 hours is too long in a folding chair, Mouthy lady across from me, Had to wear nice clothes, heavy rain, we were tardy, I notice occlusions and stone flaws too easily, BHK low blood sugar, Newt accidentally in the walk-in closet the whole time we were gone.

Final Score: More win than fail. If I had to do it again I wouldn't complain, but would plan for uncomfy chairs a bit.

Saturday - We were going to spend a little time doing chores and then go to the flyball tourney with Amy and her sisters, but got sidetracked after we were invited to breakfast with Larry and Chris. Post Bob Evans, we got the tickle to pick up our copy of Zombie Fluxx at Aardvark in Solomon's.... That sort of turned in to a family trip to BJ's Wholesale with the in-laws, once they heard we were heading south for a moment. Larry And Chris suffered a little bit from sensory overload at Aardvark's, but we were in and out quickly. Just fast enough to grab our ZF and go. I found out that they don't carry warhammer minis, but instead do war machine. I wonder if Eryx and his crew mix and match figures, or if they're purely WH? Once we got to BJ's, a quick trip for some tires for Larry's car turned into Shop-o-rama 2007. BHK and I picked up a few things that we needed, Halloween candy for the kiddies, and two wonderfully discounted wii games ($20 each) - Rampage and Ninjabread Man. Chris decided to play Santa, and bought our cart of goodies as well as their own!

While grocery Shopping, we found some Theme Chocolate -



Sexual Chocolate I've heard of... Forgiveness? interesting. Tranquil and Renew... what happens if you eat all of these at once?

On our way south, there was a trailer on the side of the road hawking flowers, apples and baked goods. By the style of dress, I thought at first that one of the vendors was Amish, but on evaluation of the trailer, she must've been Mennonite - Horses would've had a tough time pulling the thing, but a truck hitch would be fine. Also went to the post office, and got Danny's Anniversary Present, and a Fluxx card "Zombies Eat Brains" promo... you use it in the standard deck, but has a Zombie theme, to be sure (The player who has Death on the table wins if the Brain is on the table.) The Boxed version of HEY! That's My Fish! I was a cruel and heartless player, and beat BHK 3 out of 3 games. I fear my victories will grow fewer in number as we get more players - I'm much better with 4 penguins than with 2.

We also stopped off at Maerten's to get our wedding rings engraved - inside of mine will be "Wing To Wing" and BHK's will be "Oar To Oar", referencing Robert Frost's The Master Speed - last lines of which are:

Two such as you with such a master speed
Cannot be parted nor be swept away
From one another once you are agreed
That life is only life forevermore
Together wing to wing and oar to oar.

Positives: Zombie Fluxx obtained (Aardvark sold out and was on it's second order!), Hey! That's My Fish!, Free Candy, Free Wii Games, Free Houshold supplies, Social time with the in-laws, ginger snaps and apples, offer to teach me old school biscuit baking techniques.

Negatives: Delayed visit to Amy for a day, no chores done - will probably have to buckle down next weekend, a little skittish about not having my wedding ring

Final Score: BIG WIN! I really can't find much to complain about getting games, chocolate and a lot of good conversation and giggles out of a Saturday. Tried Ninjabread Man, and the controls are tricky, but not bad once you're used to 'em. I bet Bugah will be quite good at it.

Sunday (Today) - I slept in until 10:30! I never sleep that late, but it must've been quite needed.

BHK and I hustled out the door to visit with Amy before she headed back for New York - got to give a friendly wave and offer support. We didn't ge tto eat together, but BHK and I took in some gorgeous weather, and went for pizza at 3 brothers - Sicilian with ricotta and garlic, BHK got meatballs on the side. Really, really good. Enough left over for dinner and for me to take to work tomorrow for lunch... and for BHK to have a nibble for lunch, too.

Stopped in Annapolis to look at couches at Jennifer's to replace the pink Torquemada-inspired beasties on the living room wall. Some solid, affordable options there... most light at the end of that tunnel yet. Nothing totally sings, but we have a few ideas about what to do now.

We got home and flopped in front of the TV in the treehouse, caught up with The Office, Earl, and Midnight.... and just enjoyed snuggles with Newt in bed. Chris called to invite us over for Veggie soup, but I was too pooped out to get dressed and head over there. They understood, and BHK worked our way downstairs to catch up with some of the Ugly betty and cake making challenge video we had saved there - got sleepy, and we hit the sack shortly thereafter.

Positives: walkabout, moon pies on the road with diet cranberry splash, super good pizza, maybe a new couch soon, offered Amy a chance to come visit, ATW man, Further along on couch search, lots of nice time with BHK.

Negatives: The day was too short!

Final Score: Solid win. Comfy, Autumnal, lovey day.

Slow day at home this morning/ early afternoon.. I was tired/ headachy and BHK still allergy-ridden, so we took it easy and napped / rested until the sun dropped lower in the sky. We hung out, watched a few episodes of League of Gentlemen - I was tired and grumpy, and still quite enjoyed the casual ly surreal evil of it all.

Headed off to annapolis and grabbed a snack at The Fix deli - good potato knishes, and BHK's Turkey Sammich looked tasty. (some new people working got the order a little out of whack, but it was minor stuff like leaving off condiments and not toasting bread.. easily fixed.)

Right about 5ish, we headed out to hit the Annapolis games club - BHK, Brent, Alison, Paul, Neil, James, Brien and I played many rounds of apples to apples, Fluxx, Aquarius, and Chrononauts (Early American history version) - surprisingly, Aquarius beat Fluxx as the popular new game of the night. I think the matching and quick launch rules were just a little bit faster to run with, due to no body text on any of the cards. Brien seemed to really dig Fluxx, however - He brought a lot of Rio Grande games and Big M - I really wanted to investigate Power Grid and Manila. I suspect that we'll be playing more of the German-style games next go-round at the main club. Brent and Alison invited us to thier regualr game night at home, too - about 5-20 people show up at any given session, and it should be fun. I liked the group - everyone was interested in learning new things, playing fair and being good sports. We all ordered chinese food at about 7, and I think we called it a night at just about 11:30ish.

We stayed too late to bounce from there to the Cheeky Monkey Sideshow, but we'll probably catch Swami Yohmahmi tomorrow at the renfest.

Tasty Falafel last night, despite BHK not feeling well.

Took her out tonight, glad that she's up to it... maybe a little cheeburger cheeburger and a road time will jump start her to feeling better for the weekend!

After a tasty garden-cheeburger, frings and cherry chocolate shake, we swung by the store and got her some new jeans, before making a very brief visit to eyeball Comics and Games and Stuff. (Courtesy of The Looney Labs store finder )

Dropped 12 for 3 very inexpensive games - Change! , Cosmic Coasters, and The Very Clever Pipe Game. All of which should be wonderful additions to our games closet, and are pretty small and portable, should we decide to take 'em with us somewhere.

Speaking of new, portable games, Eryx wrote us and mentioned that he's sending us a copy of EcoFluxx as a wedding present! Thanks Eryx! We need to steal him from the UK and have him visit sometime. :)

Also the Labs have recently produced Twin Win, an Icehouse game suitable for use while waiting in line.
