Whew - super hot out today - in the triple digits... and I'm designed for cooler weather. Inside the house, we have the a/c set for 69F and the thermometer is reporting about 10 degrees warmer in here. Still, not as bad as outside.

Larry's work on the closet expansion is done - double the accessibility, and it looks nicer, too. All that remains is painting around the edge, and we're finished. Next trick will be adding another walled off area at the foot of the bed for more storage space. BHK and I are enjoying sleep in our own bed again, and the kitties are very pleased to be allowed back in the bedroom.

We went to Selby's for supper - saw the ATW man changed again - now he's got his head stuck through a billboard showing him lazing on a beach at sunset, playing guitar to some bikini babes.  Additionally, Chris and Mandy spotted some local wildlife (turtles and spider) and a nice barn - I autopano'ed the bar, to add detail - a pretty spiffy stucture.

BHK and I stopped off at the flea market on the way to study at the library - picked up a nice fedora for $5. (see icon) comfy and it fits. Also got a rock heater for my back and/or BHK's feet

ATW is especially freaky today - he's being hunted by some giant clown phantom. Probably a cannibal.

Cable guy came by this morning to evaluate our Internet - he replaced the line from the pole to our house, and the box on the pole - looks better, but they're sending out another truck on Monday to evaluate some more. I'm just glad it's not an "inside the house" issue. I suspect with so many folks using Verizon around here, we may be the only Comcast people using that particular line. (side edit, spellchecker wanted to change "Comcast" to "compost". I feel the same way. )

While waiting for the cable guy, BHK tuned in to Twilight and I watched it with her.  It was about what I expected. The lead characters didn't do much for me - I saw no "sizzle" and they weren't particularly attractive. There was certainly a powerful Mary Sue vibe going on. I'd say I liked the wolf tribe folks most of the lot of 'em, and I think BHK liked the little emo-haircut news-kid.

After the pole-climber was done, we headed out for the day - First got my shots in record time - (BHK and Kendall's Mom chatted, so it seemed more quickly that I thought) - Instead of our usual walk around town, I thought it'd be nice to take BHK to Annapolis and just hoof it there for a bit.

Did a lot of window shopping and people-watching. Rather than getting lunch, we just sort of nibbled at the assorted stops along the way. Split a bagel here, a cookie there, a coffee somewhere else.

Stopped off at third eye comics - picked up vol 1 of Planetary and the Essential Dr. Strange . (BHK grabbed The New York Four - being an NYU grad and all) They guys at Third Eye are always willing to lend a hand, and can recommend stuff that they think I'll like - so far, so good! I'm not a huge Warren Ellis fan, but planetary has a lot of good stuff in it - and I've always dug Dr. Strange.

Passed by an estate sale - lots of nifty antiques - I think it gave BHK the idea to do a distressed dresser in the bedroom.

K-mart of the walking dead - Got some solar-charged tiki lights for the porch walkway. The employees and customers were more than a little frightening - red-eyed and many doing the thorozine shuffle. Contemplated lawn furniture for spring, and decided against it, as it was too rickety for me to be sitting on for any extended period.

Visited the local hardware store to look for a bracket to hang the bell from my dad's boat up - may return there next week.

Paused at a school yard sale (raising money for the band to go to Canada) - we got some baked goods - a crazy-colored cupcake (see below), and a brownie...  BHK also snagged a hot dog, and bought her mom some orange glasses - perfect for a margarita sometime. I obtained another webcam - this one was only $1 after BHK haggled it down from $2. We'll see if it works later this month.  Also seen below are the ATW man playing ping pong, a found travel bug (trailer on the bio lab at the same yard sale) and an advertisement that stopped BHK in her tracks. PUPPIES IN BABY CRIBS.

BHK loved the Puggle , but I was a bigger fan of the Brussels Griffon not as cute, but it had a fantastic and playful personality - a little "tough guy". It's a good thing I'm still very allergic to the critters, or something probably would've come home with us.

The in-laws met with us later on, and we did supper at Adam's Ribs - a onion loaf was bit greasy, but the veggies were good, and the service excellent.

Finished up Twilight when we got home... a lovely full day.

Off to a slow-pokey start today - I think we got out the door at something like noonish. BHK and I went on a little journey to St. Michael's, primarily to hit the maritime museum we missed last visit.

The place is a good bit of land to walk over... thankfully, much of it is inside and nicely air-conditioned. I liked the sense of humor that a lot fo the exhibits had... some fairly off-color quotes about sailors and fishemen. I wasn't totally wowed by the place - one visit was good, but I don't think that I have any great need to return.

The Solomon's Island Museum is a lot smaller, but they have River Otters (Two- Bubbles and Squeak) on site, which is very tough to compete with.

In fact, I think that BHK and I had more fun seeing the occasional wild squirrel, duck or jackrabbit than the exhibits.

Headed home, once we were appropriately sun-baked. Sundown on the bridge. We stopped at Holly's Restaurant for a little nibble that turned into a massive pile of food. I'd say the big win there was the cream of crab soup... french fries were a little soggy, and were the weak link.

Pictures from the trip - at flickr - for st. peter's church and bunnies and duckies and cute little squirrels eating pine cones and sunsets and bhk trapped in a sailboat thingie and my head being pinched by a crab claw and the ATW man looking all scary.
look under here for lots of thumbnail photos to enlarge! )

Regarding the ram and the video card ordered yesterday - was expected to be sent out in 5-10 business days, but the vid card was already launched an in capitol heights Maryland post office by 9am Sunday morning. With any luck, it'll be in the mailbox by tomorrow! Not bad for freebie shipping!

Got my shots - minor reaction, but nothing tragic.

Met up with the in-laws, and headed to selby sub shoppe - pizza for all, I got a black bean burger and fries. Tasty as all get out!

We planned on heading to Annapolis after to go see Wall-E, but instead we stopped at Toys-R-Us, and picked up Marvel Heroscape and Good Ol' Scrabble.

Heroscape is cute.. sort of like heroclix or D&D miniatures. The fun thing is that it's cross-genre, so you can have cowboys shooting at zombies, fighting robots, ninjas, superheroes and cavemen all on the same board. (and if you like, you can make custom cards for units very easily - so you can have spongebob fighting a paperclip, if you want.) Basic rules are quick and easy... advanced rules look more fun, and maybe another moment or two to learn.

BHK and I opted to head back home after getting our loot - there was a storm brewing... even tornado warning, and we wanted to be curled up at home anyhow.
0802081841.jpg
We swung by the ATW man - done up as a prospector - I'll try to get better photos of him later.

Watched some tube, lounged, and the in-laws came over - we half watched Micheal Clayton while we played scrabble - Chris dominated.. and she was half asleep. I'd hate to think of what sort of opponant she's make at full mental charge. Chris scored 258 to my 247 and BHK's 162 - and Chris laid all of her letters down first turn... accounting for 63 of those points! I was feeling a little sour-grapey, but not too much... our dictionary is a bit on the lightweight side... time to get something unabridged. The plus size was that it caused me to rethink words I'd use in a pinch... like "QI", but instead, items that are in more everyday language.

The folks went home, but BHK was still up for a wordgame, so we went with another - BHK dominated me at upwords - beat me by more than 40 points.

My brain is melted a bit.. until later, dear journal!

Upgrading the computer in the newtcam room at home - ordered 2 GB more ram for my system (Crucial 2GB Kit (2 x 1GB) DDR2 PC2-4200 UNBUFFERED NON-ECC 240-PIN DIMM, to be specific) -ups my desktop box to a proper 4 gig for less han $50, and a new video card - (EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB DDR3 Superclocked Edition PCI-Express Graphics Card (512-P3-N802-AR) - got it for less than half what it usally costs - $300 card for $160, less anothera $20 rebate for a total of $140

Super saver shipping means possibly slower send times, but the price was right, and I don't need it super soon.. I can wait a week or two.

SWAT team kills 2 dogs in raid on Md. mayor's home

BERWYN HEIGHTS, Md. — A SWAT team raided the home of a Washington, D.C.-area mayor, killing his two black Labrador retrievers and seizing an unopened package of marijuana delivered there.

Prince George's County Police said Berwyn Heights Mayor Cheye Calvo brought a 32-pound package of marijuana into his home that had been delivered by officers posing as delivery men. The Tuesday evening raid was conducted by county police narcotics officers and a sheriff's office SWAT Team.

The package was addressed to Calvo's wife, Trinity Tomsic. His mother-in-law had asked the supposed delivery men to leave the package outside. Calvo has not been charged, though police said he, his wife and his mother-in-law are "persons of interest" in an ongoing investigation.

"We never opened the box. We have nothing to do with this box," Calvo said.

Sheriff's office spokesman Sgt. Mario Ellis says deputies "apparently felt threatened" when they shot the dogs.

Calvo said officers entered about 7:30 p.m., first shooting 7-year-old Payton. They then pursued 4-year-old Chase, who ran away and was shot by police from behind, he said.

Calvo said he doesn't have any idea how the package ended up at his house. He called the raid "the most traumatic experience" of his life.

Calvo, who called his town "Mayberry inside the Capital Beltway," gets a small stipend as mayor and works at the SEED Foundation, a nonprofit that runs public boarding schools for at-risk students. His wife works as a state finance officer.

"These were two beautiful black Labradors who were well-known in the community. We walked them twice a day; little kids knew their names and would come up to them and pet them," he said.

So... the police brought drugs to the house, and then raided him... but then didn't arrest or press any charges? They *did* however kill his two dogs.

Chinese dinner tonight with BHK, and the In-laws. We watched Definitely, Maybe, and I thought it wasn't bad at all for a "chick flick." Good amount of schmaltz, not a bad vehicle for a slice of life info. I still think he's a swine, re: the book... he had postcards and whatnot.

Next on our netflix list - Machine Girl. Hopefully, BHK will enjoy that as much as I enjoyed tonight's feature.

Pointless Scotto trivia of the moment - animal crackers eaten today, roughly in the order consumed.

partials -

amazing number of intact critters in my barnum box. (60g) Sadly, no elephants. I've been to the circus, and always seen ellies - can't say the same about koalas or polar bears, though they are both adorable and cool, too.

Come to think of it, I've never seen a hippo or rhino at the circus, either. Or a gorilla. (well, maybe a clown in a gorilla suit) What are they trying to pull??

Forgot to post this yesterday -

0621081520a.jpg
ATW man Crabbing.

First thing we did today was view Swarm of the Snakehead at 1 am, when BHK woke from her Pizza Hut induced torpor "nap".

We weren't disappointed. Swarm of the Snakehead was exactly what we were looking for (and didn't get) when we went to see Grindhouse. A fun, cheesy, "bad in a good way" sort of horror flick. It's most certainly more a comedy film than horror, despite the periodic moments of gore. I'd love to see this on a large screen somewhere, or better yet as a movie shown outside, on the beach... maybe projected on the side of a large white building.

Head and shoulders above any other made for Sci-fi channel stuff, ten pound would likely do quite well to shop the film to them, or a similar venue.

I may be a bit biased, because it was filmed right nearby, primarily in Easton and Oxford - a hoot picking out local spots.

I can't believe that Gunnar Hansen was both Leatherface and the "Quint from Jaws"-style Fisherman! There's range for you!

I think I'll write up a much longer and nicer review of the movie soon - I want to get some input from BHK about her perspective on the film, too. I'd say it was the highlight of our weekend, though.

After the delightful midnight movie with BHK, we tucked back into bed, and snoozed... I'd say we got up and out of the house by 11ish.

Polished off the last of the croissants from the farmer's market (I had chocolate, she had almond), BHK decided to venture forth to Aardvark and grab our waiting games. Mike and Tara were out, but the employees were swell to us.

The day was gorgeous and since we wer euntethered by any other family responsibilities (in-laws took tigger to Salem for a long weekend), we meandered around Southern Maryland, looking for a nice new spot to grab some lunch and just enjoy each other's company.

After much tooling around of St. Mary's, we eventually ended up at the Reluctant Navigator. After eating there, I understand his reluctance. The food was somewhere between meh and ok. Service, not bad - environment when we first walked in the door was "we've made a terrible mistake" but after getting past the foyer filled with old boat motors, chainsaws, and crab traps covered in dust, the clean dining area changed our tune to "oh, this is probably all right." I'd put the food at medium-low quality. somewhere in the 3-5 out of 10 range. I seriously doubt that we'll be back, unless something amazing causes us to return.

We continued on our journey, with food in our bellies - after putting some petrol in the tank, we wandered into Cecil's Old Mill, a general store and post office - pictures to follow sometime after I upload 'em. Meanwhile, check out what somd online has to offer. When I saw the logs in place, I had two thoughts. first - that's perfect for an old movie villian to strap a maiden to, and let the hero try to save her while he gets away. The second was the gravity gun usage in last night's HL2.

The old post office was my favorite, though. Lots of memorabilia everywhere.

We bought a pair of homemade brownies and a diet pepsi, and toddled on home, to water our plants right before a huge, thunder-filled rainstorm.

We had tasty sammiches for dinner, and watched our last tivo'ed Monk - where he reunites with his pop. Not a bad character dev show, but a lousy mystery solution. "We found the tie!"

Now, bedtime. Gnitght, dear journal. Have some lovely linkies.

'Cannibal relatives ate boy alive'

A seven-year-old boy was kept chained in a closet as relatives hacked off pieces of his flesh to eat, a court has heard.

In a case with echoes of the Fritzl family horror in Austria, Ondrej Mauerova was partially skinned in the closet in a cellar at his home in Kurim near Brno, in the Czech Republic, according to reports.

The abuse – involving members of a religious cult – was uncovered by chance last May when a neighbour's television baby monitor picked up graphic pictures of what was happening next door.

Ondrej and his nine-year-old brother Jakub were locked and chained in the cellar for months by their mother Klara, 31 – a member of a group called the Grail Movement.

He was caged, beaten and gagged to stop him screaming, according to reports.

Mauerova had the monitor installed so that she could watch the abuse from her kitchen but the images were picked up by a neighbour who used an identical system to monitor a newborn baby, the regional court in Brno has heard.

Police were called and the two boys as well as what appeared to be a 13-year-old girl were freed.

But the girl later turned out to have been one of the alleged abusers, 34-year-old Barbora Skrlova.

She subsequently fled to Norway before being brought back to the Czech Republic earlier this year.

Mauerova has admitted abusing her children but she said she had been manipulated by Skrlova and her own sister Katerina.

The accused are Klara Mauerova, her sister Katerina, 34; Barbora Skrlova, 33; her brother Jan Skrla and a friend Jan Turek.

.hot.0524081304.jpg.

pictures - ATW man salutes our fallen heroes, and I complain about the heat. (Not nearly as hot as it was in other locales, so I hear!)

Slept well on the new bed - I wasn't feeling so hot earlier, but a nap helped my back and headache quite a bit. Still a little nauseated, but not too terrible.

We had the in-laws over again and made more franks and beans for dinner, and this time, the bonfire and s'mores were a reality. Added bonus was blowing bubbles.

Opted out of the new town trolley to Pete Green's - The route is cute, and could be a lot of fun - two bits to ride can't be beat. I wouldn't mind just taking it for a little day-tour out and about where BHK and I can relax and take in the scenery. I suspect that the trolley's primary use will be for drinkers getting home safe... I'm all for it if it keeps the drunkies from behind the wheel.

I want to pick up a bike - the in-laws cycled up the beach for breakfast this morning, and I thought it sounded like a fun way to ge tout of the house for a bit.

I still haven't decided what new e-books to put on the PDA - maybe I'll take a breather and stick to pulp-books for a bit.

BHK made delicious pea soup! The perfect thing after a long day at work. Nomnommy. We supped over Ugly betty and the new TV Show King trivia game for the wii. I beat Abraham Lincoln, BHK and Bughah's Kitty Puddy (random computer players plucked from our Mii farm). I like it, but the wheel is a bit too random for me.

WorldWide Telescope, developed by Microsoft's research arm, knits together images from the Hubble Space Telescope, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory Center, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and others. Windows users (only) can browse through the galaxy on their own or take guided tours of different outer-space destinations developed by astronomers and academics. The application allows viewing from different wavelengths such as X-ray, visible light, and hydrogen-alpha radiation. Business Week has a review and some background on the project, which has been in development for years. Google Sky beat them to the punch but Business Week opines that WWT's interface is superior.

he rejects it as "childish superstition," but also disliked the hubris of atheism)

In the letter, he states: "The word god is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honourable, but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish. No interpretation no matter how subtle can (for me) change this."

I'm really digging the combination of Pyecam and Newtcam. I just have to update my internal pages with Pye-links now. The cams are really mis-named, since either of the boys can land on either cam... the Newtcam is more permanently affixed in the sunny office, while Pyecam is on the more mobile, but less frequently live laptop

Newt seems to be the most interested in playing in front of the cams... Pye prefers the living room, I suspect.

I've upped the resolution on both... I'm also considering making one or both live streaming video.

And so, April comes to an end. Seeya next year, April! Wasn't too bad of one this year, all told. Some stresses, some solutions... it seems to have come and gone fairly rapidly.

Was I just doing taxes 2 weeks ago? It seems like months. I'm still getting the occasional treat at http://drop.io/scottobear , feel free to drop something off, or pick something up. I removed the m4ps, but the mp3 music is still out there.

Had the in-laws over - BHk made pseudo-beef stroganoff, baked zucchini and corn on the cob - a fine dinner which caused me to consume with gusto... and too much.

Back was doing pretty well until I hit the sack - laying straight caused some medium discomfort. I think I'll take my night meds a half hour before bed for maximum ease.

spear fishing ape

A male orangutan, clinging precariously to overhanging branches, flails the water with a pole, trying desperately to spear a passing fish.

It is the first time one has been seen using a tool to hunt.

The extraordinary image, a world exclusive, was taken in Borneo on the island of Kaja, where apes are rehabilitated into the wild after being rescued from zoos, private homes or even butchers' shops.

"Orang hutan" means "forest man" in one of Indonesia's many languages and our long-armed cousins do indeed show a remarkable ability to mimic our behaviour.

This individual had seen locals fishing with spears on the Gohong River.

Although the method required too much skill for him to master, he was later able to improvise by using the pole to catch fish already trapped in the locals' fishing lines.

The image is part of a series taken for a new book, The Thinkers Of The Jungle, which also includes the first photograph of an orangutan swimming.

Thinkers Of The Jungle, by Gerd Schuster, Willie Smits and Jay Ullal, is published by Ullmann Publishing on May 5.

Went to Fuddruckers Thursday night with BHK and the in-laws... I got a bunless veggie burger with cheddar cheese and a side salad. Not bad, for what it was. I'm more happy that we ate out at a place that Larry really likes. We drag him to Mexican, Thai or whatever else, and he's not usually that keen. (He gets a taco and french fries when we go to Mexico... close enough to a burger for him!)

On the way home, we spotted the ATW man - he's got an easter basket. (a better daytime short to follow, hopefully.)

p.s. here he is as a leprechaun, since I forgot to post it at st. patty's.

Today, barring cancellation, we hit Cheeburger Cheeburger for a late lunch today with Adam, Eric, Tina, Matt and BHK in Annapolis. I've been saving points for the trip. [edit - we did! a good time was had by all!]

Morning plans include replacing a window at the Brown house with Larry, but I suspect that timing will make it a project for next weekend rather than this one.

50 things I've done meme continues with item 33. I...

33. I did not punch a doctor in the face yesterday, despite his smarmy, holier than thou attitude, poor consult practice, shit-eating grin and "you could beat me up just by sitting on me" comment. If I were a less in control sort of guy, I'd have ripped his spine out via his neck, reversed it, and shoved it back into him rectally.

Adrenaline-removed details below.

Dr. D really took quite a lot of wind from my sails yesterday regarding my back. I'm more than a little disappointed and dismayed, but I am happy that a fix is available, contrary to my prior concerns that I have no options.

The short form - I have gained back much of my former lost weight - I'm at 364 lbs. Pulse 82, BP 148 / 88 (far higher than my usual 120/80)

BMI is 42, according to my height vs weight, which is in the very [edit: morbidly] obese category - I obviously need to get back on the stick, health-wise. (some shortcomings of this reference)

His bedside manner was lacking in the extreme - said that I was in a lot of trouble, that my spine has some severe damage that needs to be repaired and the rub is I have too much mass to properly operate on me... he can't get down past all of the tissue, (both fat and muscle) to take care of it.

I won't go into his overly condescending talk about weight loss, but the bottom line is that he feels that he can't work on me now... but he'd prefer that I come back to him in a year after I've lost about 100 lbs - then he thinks that he can repair the damage to my spine and fix the nerve short-circuit in my leg. Meanwhile, I'm going to have to suck it up, and just deal with the pain and numbness issues a bit longer... I don't mind getting on a healthy diet and workout regimen.. it's just a shame that his idea of finding a good one is "pick up a magazine" - rather than guiding me to a trainer and / or dietitian as I'd asked.

So, part of my journal is going to be recording and tracking my weight / workouts again - I'm going to resume my points-based WW program on the palmtop, and we'll see if I can get myself into fighting trim at a reasonable and healthy rate.

I will continue to see that doctor until I find a better one - but meanwhile I'm just happy that there is a chance for repair in the future. I'm disappointed that I still haven't gotten a cortisone shot, but there is a chance of one next visit to my general prac.

After much stress at the Doc's, we swung by the local Games Workshop store (right across the street). It was odd to see a store devoted to just mini wargaming, specifically warhammer fantasy, warhamer 40k and lord of the rings miniatures. Apparently the Glen Burnie site is the USA headquarters for the Games Workshop with dozens tables of goodies set up for play. I was surprised to see the one in Annapolis hopping with people - mid-afternoon on a Wednesday... I'd figure everyone that would want to get in on it would be at work or school. I was impressed by the quality of the paint jobs on the armies... a lot of labor of love going on there. BHK and I both really dug the red and yellow lizard men.

We picked up a very late lunch at Lemongrass Too - it was excellent as usual. More tofu with peanut/curry vibe and spicy-sweet green beans.

We were going to check out Be Kind, Rewind - but it was too late. The only showings at the Bowtie were at 3:30 (missed it) and 9:30 (not on a school night!) - So, while we were in the plaza, BHK shoe shopped - she really liked the keen ones... Timberline, venturea, and malibu styles. note to self for future presents!

On our way out of Annapolis we did discovered the ATW man got gussied up for St. Patty's Day (pictures to follow)... and he also has a myspace page ! Lots of pictures that I didn't have of his past exploits - we went inside ATW and got a floor mat... the reciept mentions where to locate him on the web. I've added him as a friend, but he hasn't reciprocated yet.

Dinner was boiled eggs, salad, and leftover veggie taco "meat". good stuff, solid for the end of the day.

As for today - went to work, worked, got on the bus, headed home, wrote a long entry on the ol' PDA.

BHK made some amazingly tasty split pea soup, with chick peas, carrots and cabbage. Lovely for St. Patty's.

Point budget is 35, using the weight watchers points system. I still can't abide weigh-ins and meetings, but the plan has worked for me in the past. Monitoring using the wwcalc program on the palm.

I'll export the results here in the future.

I can bank a few points for the weekend, where I'm pretty sure I'll go over when we dine out.

Misc health info -

10 minute brisk walk to the bus, light level. not worth any points, really.
10 cups water - just healthy.

Researched utility of using company gym during lunch - distinct possibility. 3 bikes, a treadmill and some free weights that might do the trick.
Bring gym clothes, allot 20 min for lunch, 20 for workout, 20 for changing/shower.

Monday monday - back to work! Not much to post about... general purpose day, but BHK picked me up afterward. We met Chris and Larry at Lemongrass - Larry wasn't gaga over it, but the rest of us enjoyed the feed. We parted company soon after - BHK and I hit the store and got the boys a new water fountain and a toy or two. I barely fended off BHK's request for goldfish and crabs and hammies and gerbils and kitties.

ATW man has varied a little from his valentines outfit.. now he has a red wig on, no heart shaped box of candy, and the rose still clenched betwixt his teeth.

If anything, he looks a bit like a grateful dead album cover at the moment. hard to get good detail with the camera phone and a back light, but bigger gets a bit more.

Taking a hint from edbook, six years ago (friends only link) -

50 things I've done in my life:
(I'll do it 10 at a time each weekday, I think, due to time constraints.)

1. 'was run over by a car while riding a motor scooter - snapped my collarbone. If the front wheel had been 6 inches to the left, I'd be dead.. 2 feet and I'd have been fine. The car never stopped to check on me, it just kept going. I didn't know it was broken at first, until I called GP on the phone and he advised that I flex my arm. After I unblacked out a moment later on the floor, I went to the hospital. Only bone of mine that broke... unless you count teeth.

2. 'have been every male part of a wedding ceremony, short of the priest. (ring bearer, usher, best man, groom). In that order. Will I be ordained enough to do the last one someday?

3. 'saw at the very least five different kinds of consensual crime performed in under an hour... my last night as a bouncer. The pay was good, but not worth going to jail for... even if nobody there was complaining.

4. 'met my wife thanks to the internet,  livejournal, and an ex-girlfriend.

5. 'got a scholarship to clown college, but opted for computer science... more lucrative, and I don't do well with sawdust-based environments.

6. 'is allergic to cats, but happily fostered and then adopted Newton-kitty when he was 3 weeks old - bottle and rag fed him every 4 hours when he was still in the nursing stage. I now live with 2 cats and don't show allergies much around them, but other animals will give me red eyes and sneezles, until I adapt to 'em.

7. 'worked for an organization that helped to search for missing children. I think that my heart was in the right place, but I'm glad to have moved on. It can be heartbreaking to hear about a kid that didn't make it, or to see petty behavior on the part of an org or the police result in stupidity that could potentially cost a kids life. Plus, I don't like being rattled every time the cell phone rings... now when the phone vibrates, the worst thing is a downed server or a weather issue. It's taken me about a year to get out of fireman-alert / stress mode every time the phone rings. I do feel that the national center is the best place to turn to when a child is missing.

8.'worked in a library through most of college and high school - during hurricane Andrew. Got to reshelve and relocate books while wearing a miners lamp on my head under rows of black plastic tarps... no power, no lights or AC. Until discovering them underfoot in the stacks, I had no idea scorpions lived in South Florida. Also, people bring porno to "read" in the rear stacks... ick.

9.'was also in the civil air patrol during Andrew, and got to see how destroyed homestead got... I had a huge amount of pity for the folks in NOLA that I might not have if I didn't see areas of just rubble and water where homes used to be. We got to round up food and water for people out there... it's what I imagine it to be like in an area struck by war.

10.'has offered spiritual advice to people, even though I have no idea what, if anything, is beyond the veil of what we can see. I've helped people through crises of faith and to find a common ground where elements can be conflicted even though I haven't the foggiest about my own faith... and I'm ok with that. I don't know if that makes me a hypocrite or what.

So, Tron 2, the movie in 2011? I've got to wonder about that one. Will I see it? Yes, if it's going to be in 3-D. 3-D makes everything at least a little bit awesome. I'm sure that BHK will want to fo see national Treasure 3... and I'll be fore it, if it's in 3-D, too... but no word on that.

The son’s tooth helps to save dad’s sight

Rob McNichol’s son — also called Rob — didn’t think twice when the chance arose to help his dad to see again by giving him a canine tooth.

Father-of-eight Mr McNichol snr (57) was blinded in a work-place accident, when liquid aluminium exploded in his face in November 2005.

But he can now see again after doctors, using groundbreaking surgery, inserted his son’s tooth in his eye.

The surgery, Osteo Odonto Kerato Prosthesis (OOKP), involved fitting a living canine tooth with an optical cylinder and transplanting it into the eye cavity

The surgery, which costs an estimated €40,000, is believed to be the first of its kind to be carried out on an Irish resident.

Pioneered in Italy in the 1960s, Osteo Odonto Kerato Prosthesis (OOKP) surgery is carried out on patients for whom conventional corneal transplants will not work. It entails replacing a damaged cornea with a live tooth root and attached optical cylinder
