50 things I've done meme continues with item 34. I...
34.'helped to plan, plant and harvest a family garden for the first time last spring. I really thought a 10 x 12 foot patch wouldn't produce more than a little vanity salad food, but we got a huge crop, especially of peppers, zucchini and cucumbers. My faves were the potatoes and zucchini.. oven baked goodness. BHK turned my lifelong disdain for zucchini into love with her baked veggies in soy flour, and covered in tomato sauce. Yum. Potatoes, I've always had a fondness for.

Ah, the blessing of a Monday off. Added bonus is a hopefully more gentle 4-day week ahead!
Got up, went to get shots... it was pretty crowded due to the holiday. BHK and I both got our appointments out of the way in a reasonable span of time. I'm about 75% through the third Harry Dresden book. It started out a bit weak, but has gained a nice momentum through the middle 50%. I especially like Mike & Charity Carpenter, even though Mike seemed pretty cornball in the first bit of the book.
After the doc, we went off to Annapolis to make use of the Joss gift certificate we got from Adam for Christmas... I was quite in the mood for a little sushi and tempura.
Alas, the curse of DC and its environs struck again. The weather was absolutely beautiful (mid 70s, sunny), and everyone in government (i.e., EVERYONE within a 250 mile radius, or more) had the day off.
No parking and Joss was full to the gills. That worked out to our advantage, as we toured a little bit until we stumbled into Lemongrass Too. The Fried Green Beans were excellent, and I really liked the Pa-Ram Jae (Deep-fried tofu sauteed with yellow curry with rice, veggies and broccoli, topped with peanut sauce) that BHK ordered... my veggie Pad Thai was good, as well. The crispy tofu appetiser was lacking, in comparison, but that might be just due to everything else being so good. We got enough for me to take for lunch tomorrow as leftovers.... double score. Not the sushi I was expecting, but a nice substitution. Really, only the second time I've had Thai since moving from Florida, and this time I was quite pleased.
We opted to walk a bit for a constitutional after our meal - there was a Best Buy next door. I picked up some wipes for my new (Xmas) monitor at home, seeing a sit has already acquired a few Newton / Pyewacket nose-prints. Additionally, we saw Lego Star Wars Trilogy being sold, and in a moment of game-lust, we picked it up. Both BHK and I dig the game, and it's 2-player.... more bonding time for us! (Like we need it).
We headed home at about 3pm... the weather was still gorgeous, but getting a bit cooler. From what I understand, there'll be snow by mid- to end-week... hardly seems possible, but I've seen stranger stuff.
Upon our arrival, it turned out that the in-laws had come over and were kind enough to take down our Christmas lights (they were too high for us to reach without a ladder.)
BHK was still feeling a little cottony, so we spent the rest of the day at home, resting and recovering energy.
I'm surprised... we really haven't eaten much since midday, but it's well after dark now, and neither of us are that hungry. We may have a little nibble in a while, but I suspect it'll be a light dining night.

Power went out this morning, but was back on by 6ish. Lots of high winds and cold... another ice storm on the way late tonight? The roads weren't as bad tonight as yesterday.

Cool history of the moment - The Cadaver Synod - Pope Stephen VI, consecrated in 896, ordered the rotting corpse of his predecessor, Pope Formosus, be exhumed and put on trial for various crimes against the church. Poor bastard was nine-months dead when they dug him up. Stephen dressed the ripe stiff in papal robes, propped it up in a chair, and proceeded to scream unintelligibly at it for several hours in front of a rapt audience. Afterwards, Formosus was declared guilty and his body was dragged through the streets of Rome, then thrown into the river Tiber. Speaking of voting, I want to remind myself in the future of something. I'm not happy with *any* of our current candidates. Hillary is the most evil, but that doesn't mean that I'm Obama's big fanboy. He's just not as bad as she is. McCain is the least evil on the republican side, I feel... not that it's hard to be the least evil in that batch.
I'm glad that the polls in Maryland stayed open an extra 90 minutes to allow for everyone stuck in the wet traffic yesterday.

Watched Hellboy: Sword of Souls over dinner of corn dogs and tater tots! nom nom nom. The movie was just ok.... I like good ol' Hellboy and Co, but it seemed too rushed and way too much time on the pyrokinetic's whining about "blah blah it'll overtake me blah". If they'd just kept it a bit lighter, I'd have liked it more... the scenes where he's fighting an assortment of bad guys got sort of old, too... not sure what I'd have done to make it better.
We had just a teensy snootch of snow today. It was nice to see some falling flakes... they soon turned to light freezing rain. Not as lovely, but nice, too.

since getting the Kitty DVD for Christmas, Pyewacket has been a regular couch potato, watching the tube with us, even if it doesn't show chirping birds, fish, or rodent-type objects. Newton is a fan of the DVD, because that means his little brother is occupied while big brother can nap in peace upstairs, or use the litter box without having a little furry frined knocking on the door, asking if he can come out and play.
Watching the specialty cat video - fish portion - Taken while the tree and presents were still out... I've been very bad about unloading the camera.
Pye was also attentive watching the Super bowl. He rooted for the Patriots. They lost. It's ok.

Speaking of which - It looked like Jordin Sparks was lip-syncing at the Superbowl yesterday, but it could just be a delay between the audio and video but it had a prerecorded feel - she wasn't selling it... I wonder why more people haven't commented on that, and the weird stock-footage air show? Tom Petty did a good job, and everything lined up audio and video-wise. I wasn't crazy about fake fans rushing his stage... he really is turning into an old mountaineer, facially.
Dinner was eggplant lasagna... BHK made a tasty meal, despite being all sick... We're tucking into bed shortly to rest up.
The birthday cake is even better left over... sort of like a hostess cupcake with the white whipped icing as filling.

Had tasty taco salads for belated birthday dinner tonight... quite yummy! I don't think that a white woman as president would change the world any more or less than having a black man in the office. Both *seem* like they'd be a big change, as far as the USA goes... but not so much in the international arena... but I don't think it would make such a big difference after a brief period of barking by racists and sexists... (on all sides of the fence)
Margaret Thatcher or Idi Amin, anyone? (or Aquino and Mandela, for the positive side of things) Those should prove that if anything, genitalia and skin color shouldn't mean too much regarding national leadership. There are good and bad leaders of all stripes.
When I hear that someone is voting on the basis of gender or skin tone, my mind plays a sing-song voice of "I'm voting for Joe So-and-so, because of his dreamy blue eyes".... it makes as much sense to me. This isn't friggin' American Idol... vote for the "talent", not the "style".
What happened to judging folks by the content of their character? That alone is the big reason I can't get behind Clinton. She's a good politician... but I think that by being so, she'll tell anyone what they want to hear to get elected... and she hasn't done a very good job of showing consistency on any issues I care about. Obama may be as bad or worse... but I don't have the huge pile of information like I do on Hillary. I can't in good conscience put a vote toward her... I don't even want her as VP, which I suspect she'll get.
Um.. Ann Coulter supports Clinton over Bill McCain, because McCain isn't conservative enough? Isn't that like getting an endorsement from the devil?

BHK had to call a plumber. Shower was backing up / drain issues, turned out to be tree roots in the line, not the conspiracy theories of flushing feminine products, popsicle sticks, or live pelicans brought forth by the lanlord-in-laws. Also, no gorillas poo in our loo.

Only a month until my own Birthday. I'm not feeling too bummed about it being the last year I start with a 3. (at least until I turn 300, I guess!) 39 seems a lot older to me than it feels. Maybe it's due to me being creaky and having back problems going back decades... but I'm not really feeling my age. I see lines around my eyes here and there... I look in the mirror when I brush my teeth and shave, but I don't see an old guy looking back at me. However... I don't see a kid, either. I certainly look a lot older now than when I started this journal in 2000. (and certainly more than in 1996, about 11 years ago here and my face squished against a scanner in '96, too, for that matter. ) Heck, if I have to rewind much more, I may as well link to a non-bearded pic of me from circa 1994, for that matter. Added bonus, Doug Wu and a clean-shaven Danny. Speaking of which - I've started growing a full beard out again, and it stuns me how much salt and pepper is in what was once a brownish-red jaw. I kind of dig it, not from a vanity perspective, but it feels right at this time of year to be a bit more furry.
When is a mid-life crisis supposed to hit? Ah, got it. 46, or thereabouts. Things are really quite good for me these days... Hopefully I won't suffer the same sort of psychological shakeup that some folks have at that time. On the agenda for this year is a more serious focus on health.
Of course, Newton has aged the most since I've started my LJ - First day I had him, back in the day... October of '99 , and About the same time in 07. He's still terribly dapper, and can put on a kitten-face easily when he wants.
BHK and Pye both are babyfaces across the board. I think BHK will be carded for booze when she turns 73.
I would love to make or just have this Beast (Henry McCoy) Sock Monkey. Very Keen!
Of the millions of webcomics out there, I've really only found about 3 that are funny, interesting, or well-drawn. Short of some clever stick figures and more well-rounded stick figures, not much about them thrill me.
I'm wondering when that cottage industry will have a culling period? I suspect never, and that's pretty great. Something for everyone, even if it's just the creator. Something that many critics forget is that they can choose not to read something that they find to be distasteful - or worse, boring. Same goes for podcasts, videos and journals, for that matter.
I didn't do the polar bear swim this year... just didn't seem like much of an event, given how unseasonably warm it was. Of course, today, it's snow weather... Perversely, I'd have done it if the weather was like this yesterday.
