Nutshelling.

BHK and I have been married 30 months today!

Book fair at the BIG warehouse. I stocked up on some Bradbury, Phil Farmer, and Laura Lippman.

Got a little walking in, but there was no way I could haul the huge pile of books about.

BHK made Homemade chili - she thinks it's burned, but I like it fine!

Lawn cut, and a lot of planting done by the family.

Dinner at Selby's - Bought Larry a Lemon Meringue pie. Veggie sub was good - Linda the cook is in the hospital, but her replacement did a great job of making a sammich.

More wii games from the library. (Wario Shake it / Super Brawl) - Wario is cute, from an old-school Mario-brothers perspective. Super Brawl didn't wow me.

Bea Arthur, RIP.

Farmers Market - BHK and Chris picked up a great number of flowers and plants for the garden, I spent the day seated for the most part.

Garden was dusted for slugs and bugs - hopefully the squirrels will stay out of the lettuce.

Rainy day this morning - took the raincoat rather than the overcoat. Slipped a bit in the mud at the station - kept balance, but my shoes and my back are paying the price.

Saw the "Truth Truck " at L'enfant Plaza (note - link can be easily considered offensive)

Reading the first book from the Nightside series BHK found for me off of bookmooch - . Fantasy Noir stuff... first 30 pages are entertaining so far. I got the fourth book at a B.I.G. booksale about a year ago, and hadn't opened it yet.

No Franklin this morning, but his opposite number, (a skittish and dirty gray tabby with white socks) said hello from a distance... ran when I greeted her, but I put some treats down in the field where she was hanging out. Hopefully she'll have a little snack later.

Set up my bookmooch account - I'm scottobear there , (avonberg is also there, far more active!)

Writer's Block: Reading Aloud
Prisoner Quiz
[info]scottobear

One of the highlights of going to a literary festival is hearing authors read from their own works. What author, living or dead, would you most like to hear read?

View other answers

Well - keeping it to the mortal realm ("God reading the bible" would surely destroy me - the True Voice being is too pure and too powerful to be heard by sinners, thus, instant death.)

Stepping to mortal flesh, I'd love to see the Sermon on the Mount, even though that wasn't originally delivered (if it was ever actually performed) as Author to Reader. I don't speak or comprehend aramaic, but to just be there at the original would be beyond amazing.

Most of the literary classics were Greek, Latin, French and German. Even Borges nifty stuff is Spanish.

Perhaps it's best to fade to more contemporary and in my native tongue.

I'd likely go for Mark Twain, as long as I could get a beer with him while he pontificated on his choice of writing.

Biblical Side note - The highest of the Archangels (and therefore the highest of the Seraphim), the Metatron acts as the voice of God and occupies the throne next to the Divine Throne of the Almighty.

Derived from the Latin Metator, Metatron can be translated as "guide" or "measurer".

Some claim the Metatron was the prophet that was turned into an angel, taken to heaven, and given 36 pairs of wings. Some believe him to be the angel that led the Hebrews from Egypt. A few theologians call Metatron "Lesser YHWH" which stands for the most sacred and unpronounceable name of God in Hebrew (well, the YHWH part anyway). Metatron is also said to be the tallest of the angels from 13 to 18 feet depending on the source, about 2 to 3 times the height of a normal man. For reference, remember that Goliath is believed to have been about 9 feet tall.

The Metatron was thought to have many names. Yahoel, Yofiel, Surya, and Lad are just a few of his 72 other names. Some believe that he carries the Jews prayers through 900 levels of heaven to God.

It is Metatron's task to sustain mankind (as seen in Kevin Smith's Dogma, he interacts with the humans to prevent their demise). He has been known as the link between the human and the divine. After arriving in heaven he was transformed into a spirit of fire and equipped with 36 pairs of wings. In addition, he has countless eyes with which he sees over all the earth. He resides in the 7th heaven and, when he feels like it, appears as a pillar of fire (as the one in Exodus which handed down the ten commandments to Moses). He is the supreme angel of death. God tells him who is to die, he then tells angels below him to take care of the gruesome task.

Metatron is said to be the highest of all the angels, more so even than Michael or Gabriel. The burning bush, pillars of fire, and any other time a human thought he was talking to God, he was actually talking to Metatron (except those sort who are actually just talking to themselves - who can say?)

Got my serum at last/ at last, and EKG was done. I'll know more after my doc reviews it.

Yellow Trike at Starbucks, man with bumblebee helmet - Man not shown. Nice Guy - goofy fan of his new ride... made a comment about lack of cup holders.

We went to Starbucks - BHK found a $15 gift card, so we figured we'd go - BHK's pumpkin spice coffee was pretty nasty - I remember why we don't go to that starbucks (or really any these days.) My lemonade/ passion fruit tea was jim-dandy.

 .0913081046.jpg.0913081047.jpg.

Went to the BIG book sale, but I didn't get anything, and BHK only got maybe 5 rather than our usual take of a big ikea bag's worth. I think it got fairly picked over before we got there... earlier next time, perhaps.

Selby Sub Shop with in-laws, I had egg salad which was yummy. prior to that, I played spore for a bit while BHK dug on her new books, and Larry cut down the dead bits of our garden with the edge trimmer.

Amy's taking a pass on vacationing here this week - sick mom at home and she want's to stick by her there. Hopefully her mom feels better soon. We'll likely see her in October-December sometime.

Best part of the night was coming home and having a "no power night" - lights low, relaxing to 40s music on the couch, reading a book while curled up with BHK.

Google Maps map annotated with all the places Marco Polo visited during his travels to China and back. Larger map here. (via short schrift)

Saturday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly cloudy, with a low around 68. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Got epidural (ouch.), appointment with cardio, met with back doc, got spore, Mexican food and maggie moo's.

Wal-mart drew the last straw, and is now on the official boycott list - poor service plus bad business practices in the pharmacy.

While BHK was reading bergdorf blonds, I played spore - somehow I can't use the critter I created in the demo creator in a spore game -still investigating why that is.

Went grocery shopping - Cranberry sierra mist is back and I  got creme de menthe altoids - sad to see the mandarin orange mist gone.

As for walkies - we've laid out a reward plan - we have a bundle of space-critter buttons, and for each goal, we get an additional "merit badge" - after we get up to distance, it'll be repetition. My goal is 5 miles a walk, three walks a week.

So far -

5 badges each--earned

1 after 5x 1 mile walks---Allison got a space piggy, Scott got a red astro-kitty

2 after 4x 2 mile walks

3 after 3x 3 mile walks

4 after 2x 4 mile walks

5 after 1x 5 miles walk!

Recent walkies

Sat - 8/23/08 -1.5968  addl -~1.2mi (total =2.7641 counting whole day )
Sat - 8/31/08 - 1.7333 miles
Sun - 9/1/08 - 2.0166 miles
Sat - 9/6/08 1.2279 miles
Sun - 9/7/08 1.631 miles

Tues - Today - Before going to the doc - 9/9/08 2.0234 miles

Walkabout pics - mostly flowers, fruit/berries and birds along the view from the boardwalk - I really like the little red star flowers - forgive the repetition, dear journal - trying out aspects of macro and zoom.

So... a nice little reprieve from Gustav for New Orleans. I hope everyone (Louisiana, Florida, and everywhere else) continues to dodge Hanna, Ike and Josephine. Note 3 years ago today, below.

The DNC homepage makes no mention of John McCain. The RNC page has a ton of attacks on Obama and Biden. That's something. Not sure what, but it's something.

BHK put me on to Disaster Dioramas - I'm partial to the Hindenburg, but I suspect that she's more into the Titanic.

Tonight we went to Ledos, and got the greasiest white pizza ever. Tummy trouble is likely to follow. we didn't bother keeping half of it. I hate wasting money and food - I suspect it'll take a lot for us to return there. Got maggie moo's as a after yuck treat - I got mint chocolate chip with chocolate sprinkles and brownie bits - BHK got carrot cake ice cream with peanut butter sauce. It was pretty good, if odd. I've got a love-creeped out relationship with cake-batter flavored ice cream.

Added bonus was at the photography center next door - we saw an orange kitten (about 3 mos) named Charlie playing with his humans... it was very adorable, and we got to talk to the family a bit. BHK thinks it might be time to get a portrait with the lads... though I'm not sure how well-behaved Newton would be for sit-down pictures. Pye is mellow enough, but it is a strange and new environment.

I forgot to mention that on Saturday we went to Leonardtown - skipped witch rock this time, and instead visited a few nifty bookstores - including one made from an old bar. I can't remember the name but it was a nifty old-school mass of books just reaching back into the far back - also went back to White rabbit and got BHK a Raven Puppet to go with her Edgar Allan Poe, a yarn store (Crazy for Ewe ) with a hostess who was very nice and kept staring at BHK's lime-vanilla ice, a model train shop and the do-dah deli... later, we went to Aardvark to pick up Pentago - BHK beat me 5-2... a sound victory indeed.

Hell of a long day at work, but BHK and I started to make her Birthday weekend roll with dinner out at Saigon Palace for dinner. We'd never been there before, so it was a bit of an adventure... Our traveler's luck served us well this time:

0822082136.jpg. 0822082057.jpg

The place was pretty empty for a Friday night... food was delicious and our servers very attentive and friendly. I'll happily go back there again and again - lots of veggie goodies to try, and the Pho will be super come colder months ahead. (I got the bird's nest, bhk got the lemon tofu. I think she won, but mine was mighty tasty, too!)

Hopefully this puts us on a solid roll toward Birthday goodness!

Ray Bradbury is 88! Happy birthday, one time great writer, now crotchety old guy! Dandelion Wine is still my one of my all-time faves. Thanks for that... I wouldn't have a lime-vanilla ice, otherwise.

In an online survey, 42 percent of Internet users admitted to logging into other people's email and social networking accounts without their knowledge. The poll doesn't ask if passwords were found, granted, or stolen — which would make for further interesting results. The write-up summarizing the results defines the respondents as part of an "educated tech-readership" and questions the ethics of logging onto someone else's account, and whether those differ depending on the person and relationship."

If you enlarge the photo, or look carefully, you'll see Tsuro, Marriage material, Canasta Caliente, Rook, Kahuna, Balloon Cup, Catan Dice, umm.. Carcassone H&G, and nibs and nabs of other part of the game shelf. Some printer cartriges and screen wipes.

Looks like I'm going on a trip to Port of Baltimore either Thursday or Friday next week! I'll be in the field that day from 9:30ish to 2:30ish, give or take.

That's a good thing... my port knowledge could use a little visual update - my last trip through Port Everglades was years ago.

Polished off the Tim Powers fault lines stuff I'd been meaning to read again... I may have to get back to Fluke and polish it off this week!

Big salad and a side sammich for dinner tonight... those quick pickles are lasting a long time!

This is Tokyo. Once a city of six million people. What has happened here was caused by a force which up until a few days ago was entirely beyond the scope of Man's imagination. Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world. There were once many people here who could've told of what they saw... now there are only a few. My name is Steve Martin. I am a foreign correspondent for United World News. I was headed for an assignment in Cairo, when I stopped off in Tokyo for a social; but it turned out to be a visit to the living HELL of another world.

Heck, Godzilla has a lot of great bits and pieces, but the opening to the original film is pretty straightforward about what's going to happen. Post-war, those words couldn't help but have meaning.

If only his name wasn't Steve Martin - but how would they have known that there would be a popular comedian by that name? Godzilla was released in 1956 - When the comic was what... 10 years old or so?

0525081242.jpgLarry and I picked up the bed this morning - BHK and I napped a bit today. Feels good so far, but it is surprisingly high - maybe 6 (likely more) inches taller than the old one.

Picture, left - Larry, scrunched down a bit to magnify the "princess and the pea effect".

Post-nap, the gang did lots of yardwork - my blueberry plant is in the ground now, as are BHK's roses... and Chris's tomato plants.

Closed out the day grilling hot dogs for the family - in-laws brought beans, cole slaw and buns... nice Sunny day today. We passed on the bonfire and s'mores - we were too full of dinner to move.

Instead, we watched some recorded top gear and hung out for a bit... bedtime again soon.

Current read - Gateway by Fred Pohl. Not bad thus far - got it free from the library bookmobile about a year ago... grabbed at random from queue when I realized that I'v epolished off all the ebooks on my PDA - will reload soon, but holding an actual tree-made book is nice. Funny that the paperback is older than Adam - Heck, printed in 1980 - it's 28 years old. 1980 doesn't seem that long ago, but I was 11 at the time.

BHK made a fantastic and healthy supper of bean/spinach salad and spicy stir-fry tofu "beef" and broccoli. Delicious and nicely filling.

Slept in a bit this morning... vacation day!!

family sleepin' in

Our neighbor's wife passed away the first of December, last year... BHK just found out about it midweek. We've invited him over for dinner next week (we initially were going to do it Wednesday, but he begged off), and are bringing him some tidbits here and there. I can't imagine losing someone that close and having to go it alone.

Last night after work, BHK and I went to Red Robin to eat while we decided on which movie to see... we were torn between two critically paned stinkers - 10,000 BC and Superhero Movie. We consumed tasty items, while watching a girl in a robin suit greet the kiddies... businss was booming for a thursday night... and continued to the Borders where we meandered andshopped a bit. Picked up a new Zagat's guid to DC and Baltimore, and a collapsable tote for BHK... fit sin a teensy keychain pouch. I teased her a little unmercifully about it, but she took it in stride. Visted the Kayak / Outdoor store and came close to getting another pair of crocs or two... army green shoes with day-glo orange straps, but sadly, they didn't have my mammoth foot size in stock. BHK passed on keanes, too.

Eventually, we settled on superhero movie... bought the tickets, and changed our minds. So, we saw 10,000 BC. It didn't stink too badly, and was entertaining in its way.

Guest Doodles supplied by BHK: (when she sees me messing with the palmtop, she always wants a turn.) Seems she always accuses me of gassiness, but this time it was true.

bhk's view of last night...ate at red robin- via bhk

Yummy Quiche & Salad for supper last night... more for lunch today! Took it Easy last night. some forgettable TV and read more of Mignola's Baltimore, or The Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire. Slow at first but it's rolling along reasonably well now.

Rhyss made a pretty nifty observation in his journal -

The New York Times did a story about relationships torpedoed by a incompatibility in taste in books.

"We’ve all been there. Or some of us have. Anyone who cares about books has at some point confronted the Pushkin problem: when a missed — or misguided — literary reference makes it chillingly clear that a romance is going nowhere fast."

Which got me thinking - what books do I have that would be most likely to send a prospective date running for the door, never to be seen again?

Actually, most of my GFs have been of a similar mindset where reading is concerned... but I have always liked nerd / geek / Rockabetty types.

Here are 10 of my "scare off potential 'normal girl' dates" books currently on the shelf - I'll leave it to BHK to do her own books, if she desires.

[edit -later] I tried, and failed. I have very little truly objectionable material - I couldn't get to 10. Instead, here's a grouping of what you might find weird or not on the shelves.

  1. Encyclopedia of Occultism - I'm sure someone will get the wrong message there! (I'm pretty much a non-believer in that sort of stuff, but I love folklore / mythology.. many tomes of that type of thing)
  2. Rats - a History (actually, BHK and I both had a copy on the shelf, until we gave one to David!) Lots of history.
  3. A bunch of gaming books. (Warhammer rules just recently picked up)
  4. A bunch of Science Fiction (Nerd!)
  5. Books about Primate Psychology - Monkey Politics
  6. A Bunch of 40s detective novels.
  7. Stacks of books that have yet been unread. BHK and I hit the book sales pretty hard, and our queue is long... and we lengthen it by using the libray, too!
  8. Books in varying states of repair, from ragged, well-loved ones, to previously mentioned unopened tomes.
  9. Books about weird people-places-things.
  10. blank page book for coloring, with pencils of many shades.

Have you ever wondered how the Enterprise would fare against a Star Destroyer, or how a Halo sizes up to a the Moon? Have you ever tried to guess just how big a Dyson Sphere would have to be to encompass the Earth's orbit around the sun? Jeff Russell has, and that's why he built Starship Dimensions, a website devoted to cataloging and contrasting the minutiae of Science Fiction's massives. In it you will find a library of vehicles spanning decades of Science Fiction movies and series, all meticulously drawn in proportion to each other. "Scale has always fascinated me," says Russell. "It is an important, yet often misunderstood or neglected way in which everything in our universe relates. And of course I've always really wanted my own Death Star, so naturally I wanted to know how big it really was, or how many Star Destroyers I could fit in it."

Similar, is the skyscraper page. (I'm glad that I could find Emerson tower info. The proper name for the Bromo-Seltzer Clock.)

Götz von Berlichingen had a problem. It was 1504 and, at the tender young age of 24, the plundering knight, mercenary and all around bastard had the upper part of his right arm torn off in a cannon blast. As someone who made his living off war and already had a sizable enemies’ list, Götz needed his killin’ hand.

So he got another one. Made of iron.

That's one awesome prosthetic.

Watched the last two episodes of Alien in America while BHK snoozed on my arm last night - pretty good.

BHK got some nerds jelly beans (sold as "giant chewy nerds") when we went to Aardvark last weekend.

The Orange were my Fave, Green were hers. (as is our usual) The crunch really added something - I liked them a lot more than standard jellybean fare, even though I like jelly belly soda-pop flavors quite a bit, too.

On the C7 bus this morning, we passed another bus (R3) with the front banner flashing "call 911 - emergency, call police" on the front. I alerted my driver, and she said that it's a common accident - the other guy likely pressed the alarm button by accident and doesn't know better. I suggested that she call the station just to be sure, and she stated that it wouldn't be needed... someone else is bound to do it.

That puzzled me... what if the guy were in actual trouble? I got off the bus and contacted to police to let them know... they haven't called me back. I wonder if they're even following up on it?

I figure it's better be safe than sorry... If I see a sign that says "HELP!!", I'm going to act on it - especially if it's as simple as dialing 3 numbers on my phone.
