Retired downstairs to view the last 85% of George of the Jungle.
Too dang cold outside for playing, so back to our place - fooled around with pirates, star-wars hero-type clix, and yet more wii.
Ultimate Alliance and Lego Star Wars ruled the evening.
BHK ordered us all some pizza, and then baked cookies.... nom nom nom. Did we give Bugah any veggies this weekend, aside from products containing wheat?
Watched Funny Farm & Trial of the Incredible Hulk - Bugah may've been a little frightened by the needle scene. I was pleasantly surprised that he wasn't bored by the 80's sensibilities and lack of special effects.
Hit the sack at 10:30... it's a school night for me!

Slept in a bit - 8:30ish
Had a blueberry bagel, chewed on left side.
Played a little rayman and more Mario Galaxy with Bugah
Went to get allergy shots - started reading Making Money
Bugah did his reading - Tales of a 4th grade nothing / superfudge.
Headed up to Annapolis with BHK and Bug for movies
Bought Bug's present - Lego Star Wars Saga, vans from Larry & Chris
Picked up Marvel Ultimate Alliance for m'self - $18 used!
Went to see National Treasure 2 again... bugah and bhk dug it, I thought it was ok, but not fantastic. I thought it was ok, but it really didn't hold together very well... the end was loose and free to say the least. It was a fun ride, and I didn't fall asleep like I dad last time.
Dinner at Cheeburger Cheeburger - Bug ate the 1/2 lb'r and is on the wall now.
Came home and played some family fluxx and then surprise hit polarity. (We may have to get it for him next present-time - we got him family fluxx as part of his stocking this year) Reminds me that I'm woefully behind on sending Eryx his goodies.

Mario Party 8.
Swift cleanup - mostly BHK's doing. She's a member of the reverse-hurricane school of speed-tidiness.
Watched psych and held my poor, sore jaw.
Straightened the office a bit, mostly clearing my desk, dealing with paperwork and holding my jaw.
Picked up Bugah in the early evening (~7:30ish)
Went to Bert's diner w/in-laws - Milkshake was soothing and delicious.
Got Bugah back to our place, and played video games until the wee hours. Preferred titles were Guitar Hero 3 and Transformers (brought with him), but we also got some other bits in here and there.

If all goes according to plan, Bugah will be staying with us next weekend - I'll be recovering from the dentist, but playing wii and just generally goofing around should be a great time for us all. Maybe we can convert him to playing fluxx, too.
In other gaming news - Half-life 2 progressing in a fun way, slowly - about 10 min of game play each time... playing on the airboat right now. Just made it to the red barn. Total Playing time: 4 hrs past 2 weeks (all pc games, including peggle, portal, team fortress 2, counterstrike, hl2, and so on) I'm just not hardcore anymore... if I ever was. Too much fun stuff to do in meat-space - video gaming is usually what I do while I wait for BHK to get ready to go out.
We were planning on heading over get groceries and then to the in-laws to set up some trains, but we grew too fatigued, and just headed home to watch our backlog of psych episodes and began the business of packing up Christmas decor for another 11 months.
I don't even remember what I had for supper... Oh, wait, got it. Cheese crackers. I skipped the leftover spaghetti - will lunch that tomorrow.

Secret Santa Day at work! I got a $20 gamestop card, a gumdrop penguin, and a candy cane! Thanks, Mystery Kringle! I suspect that'll be a hefty piece of Mario Galaxy or some other swell game.
BHK and I are just taking it easy tonight... hitting the sack early, too - just as soon as she's done on the phone with Misti. Apparently Bugah has poor faith about Santa, but they don't really talk about it. That's a bummer... hopefully the holiday spirit will still prevail.
"The Tunguska event, an explosion on June 30, 1908, cleared an 800-sq.-mi. swath of Siberian forest. Was it a UFO crash? An alien weapons test? Now, Sandia National Laboratories has released its own explanation for the Tunguska event. Using supercomputers to create a 3D simulation of the explosion, the Department of Energy-funded nuke lab has determined that Tunguska was, indeed, the explosion of a relatively small asteroid. The simulation videos are well worth checking out — they show a fireball slamming into the earth from the asteroid's air burst. The researchers caution that we should be keeping watch for many more small, potentially earth-impacting asteroids than we are currently tracking."

We have started eating the treats from our Halloween "Advent Calender" - counts down from 13 days. so far we've had two gummi eyeballs and a gummi skull.
Rather than journey south to Solomon's, BHK and I headed out to another corn maze at greenstreet gardens. Had a haunted hayride through the back 40 to the cornfield - I think the hayride was scarier than the corn.... mostly due to the bone-jarring bumps and slides around the road in an unsecured wagon!

Bugah got Mario Strikers... we may have to get a copy, to play with him online. Probably rent it first, to make sure it isn't a bum title, but the reviews are generally good.
Speaking of Mario, BHK and I thought it'd be fun to have Super Mario Brothers on the wii... 500 points later, there we go. She's more skilled than I am - but I'm catching up. I hadn't played it for about 15-18 years, while she has fairly recently.
more pictures as the uploader works - most are from homestead gardens harvest festival and store. I dig the hillbilly skeleton band. Darth Vader nutcracker for christmas? kind of keen.

One of the ideas that BHK and I bandied about on the road trip after making up random drink names... like "The devil's shoelaces", "Cool Breeze" and "Bag o' Tremors", we started thinking about magical drinks that replicate experiences - "skydiving", "slap in the face", "Karate victory" were some of the more tame ones.
Stopped at Sheetz to get a nibble mid-trip...
Observations:
- garlic fries good but swimming in oil at the bottom
- mac and cheese bleh.
- Cinnamon pretzel needs no frosting.
- Coffee drink was sort of weak.
- How many teenagers lurk there as a social thing?
- Cups leap out an attack patrons.
I think we'll stick to pre-packaged foods next time.
While at Bugah and Em's b-day, met Nana (great Gramma), The Gramma and Roy. We all went to an Italian place for supper - Joe's. From the school of "HUGE portions of OK food" The spaghetti looked great, as did the lasagna. I tried a bite of the eggplant parm, which was a little bitter - my veggie sub did fine.
Speaking of the birthday, I was surprised to see that BHK and I were the only ones to get the 10 and 5 year old any toys! Next closest thing to a toy was a gumball machine bank. Oh, wait - I forgot. Louise got Em a toy cell phone and necklace. Bugah seems to dig the skateboard, but it looks like the learning curve may be a bit more steep than we had initially thought. I'm confident that he'll be all over it soon.
After playing tanks and a few other mini-games, Bugah's given me the Wii bug again. We may try and pick one up this weekend. I also played Destroy all Humans 2 on the xbox with Bugah, which seems to be a nice sequel to the one we have for our Xbox at home.
Em was a sweetie - leading me around by the hand - we played some concentration (using dominoes to match the number of pips) before leaving for dinner.
We made it back to our place about 11:30 - worn out from the day's ruining around and socializing. My hip was a little creaky after the drive, but no ill effects aside from that.

Random bit of fun - the other day I saw a cyclist riding around on a penny-farthing bicycle... in helmet, spandex shorts and so on. I would've almost preferred to see a bowler hat and waxed moustache, but the clash of modern and historical was even better, I think.

Nope... but I did make some trades that seemed awfully in my favor - I give you my smarties, and you give me your fun size snicker bars? sure!
Misc Questions
If you were a character in a horror movie, would you survive?
I hope so! I'd probably be the "safe guy" that dies after you think the monster was dispatched, but really wasn't.
Would you live in a house that was rumored to be haunted?
Sure... I'd at least check it out.
Would you live in a house where someone had been murdered?
As long as the killer wasn't around to repeat the crime, sure.
Other than a gun, name the first murder weapon that comes to mind?
Cinder Block. Oh, ouch. Why didn't I think of poison or a knife?

No, I don't.
What is something that will haunt you for the rest of your life?
Seeing my dad on his deathbed is pretty enduring.
How do you feel about death and dying?
I think that it's something that happens - I can be pretty sensitive or pretty well-armored to it, depending on the situation.
Have you ever seen a dead body, other than in a funeral home?
Yup.
Were you afraid to go in the ocean after you saw Jaws?
I was, but I was a little kid! I got over it in under a week.
Would you eat a human if your life depended on it?
Probably. I hope I never have to find out.
What was your last nightmare?
I dreamed that my body was made of plastic squares, and pieces were left behind wherever I went... I was worried that I'd run out, because I couldn't put the acrylic/lego type squares back on.
Rather be buried alive for a night or sleep next to a dead body?
Sleep next to a dead body.

Seeing a mime and a guy in a fairy princess outfit duke it out in the parking lot.

The Small Press Expo will be held in Bethesda this weekend, Friday and Saturday. SPX is the biggest gathering of independent comic artists and cartoonists on the east coast and will feature many local artists from DC, Maryland and Virginia. I've got other plans (birthday party - even more fun, and pre-scheduled)
Movies I haven't seen yet, but wouldn't mind catching in the theater while they're still out -
3:10 to Yuma
Darjeeling Limited
Michael Clayton
Eastern Promises
We Own The Night
The Dark Is Rising - yikes... really poor reviews. Maybe not.
Whoops - Dragon Wars movie is already kaput? That didn't take long. I guess it's just as well.
No movie tonight, however. We're preparing for the previously mentioned party for Bugah and Em's... we're going to be pulling the in-laws and louise in tow, so it should be a humdinger.

Relatively mellow after the fireworks on the 3rd. More grilling of hot dogs and veggie burgers (out of propane), Louise, Doug, Tina, Kendall, Adam and BHK all got together for some good eats and limited fireworks... every time we went somewhere to shoot off some airborne pretties, the police or a homeowner came out and said no sir, no sir. The fountains were quite pretty, anyhow. Areas we were blocked include the back yard, the private beach opposite the buildings, and "forbidden beach" which is public, but right next to some big homes. A fellow came out and took down the plate numbers of everyone parked there... sort of jerky behavior for the 4th. I can understand not wanting stuff too close to your house, but we were shooting the beach and it was just 9:30pm... not too late by any one's estimation. Ah well, the food was good and we all got to hang out a bit, and enjoy a midweek day off.
There was a tornado watch in DC - just as well that we didn't head to that mob scene. The National Mall was briefly evacuated around 5 p.m., forcing the thousands gathered for 4th of July festivities to take shelter in nearby monuments and federal government buildings. By 7 p.m. the Mall was re-opened, though everyone had to pass back through security checkpoints set-up in the area again.
We headed home - BHK and I just enjoyed a little peace and quiet come the end of the day... not a bad thing at all.

via jwz - Search for Lonesome George mate is long shot
While scientists search for a mate for "Lonesome George" -- the last known survivor of a species of Galapagos tortoise -- some say the effort to fend off extinction may be in vain. Even if a mate is found, George has not been interested in reproducing in the past and may not know how, former keepers and others who have worked with him said.Reviewing Openads for the company's ad server for the web. it seems pretty reputable and reliable, thus far."He has problems ... he probably never saw a female and male of his own species reproducing," said Swiss biologist Sveva Grigioni, who worked with George 13 years ago.
Grigioni, now back in Switzerland, said she could normally get tortoises to ejaculate within minutes, but spent months manually stimulating George and never extracted semen from him.
Age is not George's problem. He is estimated at between 60 and 90 years old, and could live to be 200 and still reproduce, scientists say.
The visual differences in tortoises from different islands were among the features of the Galapagos that helped 19th Century British naturalist Charles Darwin formulate his theory of evolution. Since then, the tortoises have been hunted by pirates for their meat and their habitat eaten away by goats introduced onto the islands. George, who weighs 198 pounds, was found on Pinta in 1971.
Fire drill this morning was a welcome break in the day - cool outside, everyone seemed laid back and calm - helped move the rest of the time that much more rapidly. the 2pm meeting went well... lots of good information for me to ruminate over the next few projects. I really dig that I'm in an environment that will allow me to use the skills I have! (Last gig wasn't bad, but a lot of repetition. This time, there's a lot of room for creative thought along with brute force.
Day closed with S'mores over a fire pit, some preview fireworks, and then Bugah and I played a bit of "Destroy All Humans". Not a bad thing.
