*grunt*... so, we lost an hour, eh?

Walkabout was nice, but the tree zoo didn't have many photo opportunities... a lot of it is still being rebuilt post-hurricane season, so a there are quite a few braced or naked trees. After doing the path, I stopped off at the Rec Center in the park... pretty awesome joint, too. Air Hockey, Pool Table, ping pong, and foosball. TV was tuned to fairly oddparents. At midday, the only other people there was a father and son playing ping-pong (badly - the boy was about 5, and had no sense of spacial boundaries, but it made me feel good to see a pop and his kid spending smiley quality time together.) I cooled off in the A/C for a bit, refilled my canteen with ice-cold water from the fountain, and watched tv for about 15 minutes. I suspect I'm the only person in Deerfield who wears a canteen in the city... or if there are others, mine is the only one containing water. I wonder why the homeless I see don't have canteens, or at least some sort of giveaway water bottle on a strap?
I walked from the arboretum to the Deerfield Mall, saw there were no movies of interest on the marquee, and caught the bus to the library... I renewed my library card. Broward Library now has a "key fob" scanner card like the ones used by CVS and Winn-Dixie, as well as the standard ID. I wandered over to the young adults section, and sniffed out the graphic novels, scattered amongst the manga.
I read the first top ten story, and headed back out again.. made it home. Found a $5 on the side of the road. Sun was strong yesterday.
I got about 9 miles of walking in. (about a 15 mile route, including the bus)
Pictures in convenient icon thumbnail size - Mostly trees, insects and iguanas, with a dash of Newt. Click to bring to a medium size
autostitched picture of the tree on Hillsboro blvd by the post office
Little anole lizard on the power transformer behind the condo rec building
A young iguana by the lake out back
Bigger bull iguana
"Big Red" - He's losing some of his Orange vibrancy, now the mating season is over.
Another large bull. he was sunning on the sidewalk, but got up as I approached
autostitch test of the view from the bus stop in front of century village
the tree in an open field off of 8th and se 2nd ave. If I were to take a picnic somewhere off the condo grounds, I'd probably go here.
Top Ten for the win! Nice to read for cool off moment #2.
Footprints in the sidewalk around powerline and hillsboro
Torquemada punishment bench on the heart trail. Painted dark brown, and bakes all day, unshaded. If I were touch that thing with flesh or fabric, *ignition*!
Sad statement about most of the trees at the "tree zoo". After 2005's hurricane season, they have quite a few stumps, or trees lashed to stakes for regrowth.
baobab tree from Africa. It looks like a good tree to plant around haunted houses..
The one, true way. It leads to the rec center.
found a few butterflies amongst the plant life
I thought of sedef when I saw it.
Cheers to the desert Butterfly and her family!
Dragonfly... wings like Herm!
Groovy bus with flame down the side.
Another angle of "Big Red"
Speaking of Big Red, Newt watches the blue jays outside. I'm going to have to try out this "amazing circle" style graphic production, now that I'm using autostitch and a high-quality camera. Check out the flickr pool.
Dave's Gourmet Hot Sauce & Garden Spray is not only for spicing up food, but it's also to prevent deer and rabbits from eating your garden.
The product literature actually says, "We created this sauce to be a delicious addition to your food and a way to keep deer and rabbits from eating your roses and carrots."
And it comes in a spray bottle, which perhaps makes it the first "edible" pepper spray. Wasn't that a skit on Saturday night live?

I've realized that Deerfield has replaced Fort Lauderdale's Homeless and Junkie population with Iguanas and Butterflies. Every day I'm out and about, I see wildlife rather than being approached for a handout or worse. I'm glad of that. It's amazing what a difference fifteen miles can make. Riding the bike is actually a realistic option, and if I want to check out the more urban decay, I'm able to get to it quickly.
Heavy-duty rains early this morning. I hope I can get to the train station without getting soaked! I'll be taking my trusty, rusty waterproof GPS with me to see how well it tracks my movement. I really ought to download some more detailed local maps for it.

The United Nations has tried to ban people from traipsing up to the moon whenever they feel the urge and sticking a flag in it, but The Lunar Republic, when established here on Earth, will monitor and adjudicate the uses to which everyone's favorite satellite is put. No longer will its popular landmarks be endangered by growing development concerns.
