Sick right after lunch today - stomach cramps, vomiting and a bit of shakes afterward. I wish the bathroom at work was less centrally located.. I felt like I was broadcasting my problems to the whole office. Ah well... no helping that.

Watched season opener for Eureka last night and the start of Death at a Funeral. (spoilers on page - don't read, unless you care to know.) Both were pretty standard fare for the genre, but entertaining nonetheless. Product placement in Eureka - interesting... I was surprised that we watched it last night -was rather expecting it to be a "see the whole season prerecorded after it's ended" sort of thing. As for the movie, it's always nice to see Peter Dinklage.

BHK made salad and queso for me, and had some left over chik-fil-a strips in hers... it smelled wonderful, and mine was delicious.

I Used To Believe is a wonderful site where people share things they used to believe as a child. The vast menagerie of monsters that children create (most of which apparently live in the toilet) is simply amazing to me, and that section of the site is a favorite.

Work continues to grind along.. .it's "in the thick of it" stuff, but I'm glad it's finally getting to a point where I can see positive closure points to the project ahead. Later, I'll get to implement the human contact side of things, which will be interesting. I get along well with others very well, especially for a tech-type guy.

Dinner of an awesome spicy bean soup and open-face veggie meatloaf sammiches! BHK makes the most wonderful food, both health-wise and comfort-wise.

We watched Dan In Real Life, which was pretty good... not nearly the stinker I'd heard it was. Nice to see Steve Carell outside of his normal slapstick / idiot character.

That's about it, dear journal - running on vapors, and will be off to bedski soon - leaving early for work tomorrow. G'night!

Work is getting back to paces - looks like we'll have a few very solid weeks of care to deal with up ahead. I'll take my replacement day off at that point.

Not too many people to socialize with out here, and when they are available I'm pretty busy. After this primary project has been done, I can get back to visitors and whatnot.

BHK made tasty sausage (tofurky italian sausage for me) and veggies on whole wheat spaghetti with garlic bread. Yummitty yum yum! More tomorrow for lunch, and that's fine by me!

Middleman tonight was fun - I don't blame the aliens at all for minding our intrusion, and it was nifty seeing inside Ida's noggin.

Joe Biden's pro-RIAA, pro-FBI tech voting record

By choosing Joe Biden as their vice presidential candidate, the Democrats have selected a politician with a mixed record on technology who has spent most of his Senate career allied with the FBI and copyright holders, who ranks toward the bottom of CNET's Technology Voters' Guide, and whose anti-privacy legislation was actually responsible for the creation of PGP.

That's probably okay with Barack Obama: Biden likely got the nod because of his foreign policy knowledge. The Delaware politician is the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations committee who voted for the war in Iraq, and is reasonably well-known nationally after his presidential campaigns in 1988 and 2008.

Beautiful day out this morning - we went for a nice 8am constitutional to check out the bay fest pre-opening. Lots of seagulls on the beach waiting in advance for folks dropping bits of funnel cake and corn dog, no doubt!

It got pretty hot by the time we got back - I left in a fairly creaky condition, but was ok, but tired once we arrived home. BHK and I lounged for an hour or two, and then I got a message that boiled down to my going into work on Monday. Too many issues with the project - can't in good conscience take the day off, under the circumstances. I think that I was more disappointed about not getting BHK's birthday off to treat her more than she.

After wrestling with that for a bit, we headed back to bay fest for some junk food, people-watching and a bit more exercise. While at the Bayfest I saw Kathy Bauer! I worked with her at Calvert county a little over a year ago, and she recognized me immediately. That crew was the kindest and most fun group of people I've ever worked with... a shame that it just wasn't affordable to work there. We didn't stay long, but got a couple of veggie egg rolls and some limeade and orangeade which really hit the spot. Between the 'fest and home, we took another A/c break at Coffee, Tea and Whimsey and ended up purchasing a bottle of wine for the evening's birthday celebration, some awesome horseradish/garlic dip, some goofy rubber monster key-toppers, and a keen Buddha eye-glasses holder for BHK's nightstand. Pictures of those... and the 'fest to follow.

More resting and just goofing around until six came... bhk and I were watching primeval and just soaking up some snooze-vibes with the kitties. I waited for BHK to hit deeper sleep, and went to sneak off to do some wrapping, but it wasn't stealthy enough - but she relented to nap while I wrapped.

We went to the in-laws for dinner - BHK got her desired Chik-fil-a strips and nuggets, and Chris made her a cake, too. She managed not to be buttered, but Larry psyched her out a few times. Aside from the tasty dinner (I had eggplant, zucchini, and the best corn on the cob of the summer), a little room was saved for the cake.. it was a reduced sugar yellow with chocolate icing... pretty yummy!

Loot BHK got was - card 1 from me - made her cry, but they were happy tears, cards from her grandparents on Larry's side - in-laws gave her a cat encyclopedia, a ruby and diamond heart necklace w/matching earring-studs, and $100 toward a sewing machine.... very, very generous and appreciated!

0823082135.jpg
The cake - pre-ignition. Don't worry - BHK will be butter-nosed, yet, dear journal!

Day ended with us lounging at the in-laws living room - Hallmark channel vs the Rock.

Over at Gamasutra, Steve Fulton has published a massive 23,000-word history of Atari from 1978 to 1981, encompassing '... some of the most exciting developments the company ever saw in its history: the rise of the 2600, the development of some of the company's most enduringly popular games (Centipede, Asteroids) and the development and release of its first home computing platforms.' Best quote in there for Slashdot readers, perhaps: 'Atari had contracted with a young programmer named Bill Gates to modify a BASIC compiler that he had for another system to be used on the 800. After that project stalled for over a year Al was called upon to replace him with another developer. So ... Al is the only person I know ever to have fired Bill Gates.

Hell of a long day at work, but BHK and I started to make her Birthday weekend roll with dinner out at Saigon Palace for dinner. We'd never been there before, so it was a bit of an adventure... Our traveler's luck served us well this time:

0822082136.jpg. 0822082057.jpg

The place was pretty empty for a Friday night... food was delicious and our servers very attentive and friendly. I'll happily go back there again and again - lots of veggie goodies to try, and the Pho will be super come colder months ahead. (I got the bird's nest, bhk got the lemon tofu. I think she won, but mine was mighty tasty, too!)

Hopefully this puts us on a solid roll toward Birthday goodness!

In an online survey, 42 percent of Internet users admitted to logging into other people's email and social networking accounts without their knowledge. The poll doesn't ask if passwords were found, granted, or stolen — which would make for further interesting results. The write-up summarizing the results defines the respondents as part of an "educated tech-readership" and questions the ethics of logging onto someone else's account, and whether those differ depending on the person and relationship."

Magpies can recognize themselves in a mirror, confounding the notion that self-awareness is the exclusive preserve of humans and a few higher mammals. It had been thought only four species of apes, bottlenose dolphins, and Asian elephants shared the human ability to recognize their own bodies in a mirror. But German scientists reported on Tuesday that magpies, a species with a brain structure very different from mammals, could also identify themselves. It had been thought that the neocortex brain area found in mammals was crucial to self-recognition. Yet birds, which last shared a common ancestor with mammals 300 million years ago, don't have a neocortex, suggesting that higher cognitive skills can develop in other ways.

Roger Ebert is not a fan of 3-D movies.
Ask yourself this question: Have you ever watched a 2-D movie and wished it were in 3-D? Remember that boulder rolling behind Indiana Jones in "Raiders of the Lost Ark?" Better in 3-D? No, it would have been worse. Would have been a tragedy. The 3-D process is like a zombie, a vampire, or a 17-year cicada: seemingly dead, but crawling out alive after a lapse of years. We need a wooden stake.
Oh... BHK is going to disagree there!

You've been fantastic and I hope you enjoyed it. There is a point, is there a point to all of this? Let's find a point. Is there a point to my act? I would say there is.

I have to.

The world is like a ride in an amusement park. And when you choose to go on it, you think it's real because that's how powerful our minds are. And the ride goes up and down and round and round. It has thrills and chills and it's very brightly colored and it's very loud and it's fun, for a while. Some people have been on the ride for a long time and they begin to question, is this real, or is this just a ride? And other people have remembered, and they come back to us, they say, "hey - don't worry, don't be afraid, ever, because, this is just a ride..."

And we... kill those people.

Ha ha

"Shut him up."

"We have a lot invested in this ride. Shut him up. Look at my furrows of worry. Look at my big bank account and my family. This just has to be real."

Just a ride. But we always kill those good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok. But it doesn't matter because: It's just a ride. And we can change it anytime we want. It's only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and money. A choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love, instead, see all of us as one. Here's what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money that we spend on weapons and defences each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace.

Worst Habit - I'm a bit of a clutter-bug, and often fail to pick up after myself. I'm trying to be better about it, though.

The nice folks at NPR have done us all a favor and taken some used Kinoki foot pads to be tested to see if they'd drawn anything out of a guinea pig reporter's body. Guess what? They didn't.

Reporter Sarah Varney bought some Kinoki foot pads and wore them to bed. She also subjected her husband to the (alleged) detox treatment. In the morning, they both awoke to the stinky brown mess that the advertisement had promised. Not convinced that the brown stuff had actually come from their bodies, our hero took the foot pads to a lab and had them analyzed and compared with unused pads.

"Compared to the blank that's almost identical," said the scientists. "It looks like three of the same sample, basically."

A doctor from UC Berkeley confirms the scam diagnoses. Your body already eliminates "metabolic waste" and "toxins" through, um, other means...

"For many hundreds of thousands of years we've been successfully eliminating them through the usual means, which is urine and feces, and there has been no demonstrated need to accelerate that."

So what is all that gunk in the pad? We're not really sure, but it shows up if you hold the pad over a pot of boiling water. Who knew distilled water had "metabolic waste"?

Yesterday's Anniversary supper went well - Today after my shots, BHK and I pretty much hung out around the house and chilled out. I installed the new ram into my system, and it chugs nicely thus far.

Once it got cool enough outside, we went for a long walk - from out house down to the bay, along the boardwalk... and then we stumbled over the in-law's BMG... so we gave 'em a ring to ask where they were. There was a classic car show at the "Worstlawn" Inn. Thankfully, the in-laws have the same opinion of the place as BHK and I do... so we went to Thursday's for dinner up the road. We parted company - BHK and I walked back to our place and the in-laws tooled off home.

A few pictures from the day - They can't capture how stunning a pink moon over the blue bay can be.

[I'll insert flickr pics here- after they're uploaded, and link back from a future entry.]

Some very interesting research out of the University of Washington that employs a method of using high quality photographs to enhance a video taken of the same subject. The project page gives a good overview of what they are doing and the video on the page gives some really nice examples of how their technology works. Hopefully someone can take the technology and run with it, but one thing's for sure: this could make amateur video-making look even better than it does now." And if adding mustaches would improve your opinion of the people in videos, check out the unwrap-mosaics technique from Microsoft Research.

A great warrior wanted to test his manhood. Every opponent he faced fell before him. He heard of a fighting monk, an enlightened warrior who lived alone at the top of a mountain in a secret temple. He resigned himself to practice, perfect his skills, then find and face this monk in battle. It would be the ultimate validation of his mastery and abilities.

When it was time, he climbed the mountain and searched for the secret temple for seven days. All the while, he thought of the boldest, most offensive challenges that he would use to inspire the fiercest battle from the monk. On the last day, he came to a clearing and there he saw the steps of a small temple. On the steps sat a formidable man with the clothes of a holy man and a serene smile on his lips.

The warrior puffed up his chest and, with no introduction, began hurling insults upon the monk. The monk only smiled at him. The warrior redoubled his efforts, berating the monk for everything from his appearance to his mute stupidity. He questioned the virtue of his mother and heaped insults upon the sacred temple. All the while the monk sat smiling. After a time, the warrior became hoarse and enraged.

"Why do you just sit there like an idiot? Why do you smile when I insult you? If you were a real man and a worthy warrior, you would stand up to me!", cried the warrior.

"May I ask you some questions?", inquired the monk.

"Ask what you will.", said the exasperated warrior, hoping that the monk's sudden breaking of his silence was a route to engaging him and moving him to anger.

"If I give you a gift, and you refuse to take it, to whom does it belong?"

"It still belongs to you.", replied the warrior.

The monk smiled, "To whom do the insults belong?"

CNBC reports that Netflix' shipping systems have been at least partially broken since Tuesday. They managed to ship nothing on Tuesday, half of what they were supposed to on Wednesday, and nothing today. What's the deal? Apparently the outage affects 1/3 of their customers (including good ol' Scotto and BHK), to whom Netflix is trying to figure out the best way to refund some cash. They're still not sure what the root of the problems are, so in essence, they have no idea how to fix it. Be prepared for a few more days of outages, unless it turns out that it's a super easy fix that's much harder to diagnose than to repair.

Random Scotto Factoid -

I'm an avid reader but some very simple words are sometimes mental stumbling blocks.

Examples:

Singer. Someone who sings... but my brain always reads it as someone who singes. As in: What is that singer superficially burning today? I guess I'm not altogether wrong.

Also Bewilder is not equal to "Be Wilder"... but that's how I hear it when I read it. conversely, I read Wilder as "Will-der". I have no idea how I mixed tohse up as a kid.

I know the old gags about manslaughter / "Mans Laughter" and Therapist / "The Rapist", but my mind never really ripped those words in the wrong way.

Walk is a word that just looks wrong to me... as does talk and balk. Ls and Ks just don't jibe to me.

The VGT Omnivore’s Challenge.

I haven't always been a vegetarian.

I have eaten the following (in bold):

1. Venison
2. Nettle tea
3. Huevos rancheros
4. Steak tartare

I officially know more about Rsync than I ever thought I would. It's a mighty handy tool.

Long story short -
rsync is written as a replacement for rcp and scp. One of the earliest applications of rsync was to implement mirroring or backup for multiple Unix clients onto a central Unix server using rsync/ssh and standard Unix accounts. With a scheduling utility such as cron, one can even schedule automated encrypted rsync-based mirroring between multiple host computers and a central server.

Currently doing a master <-> master -> offisite slave config.

Also set up a sql-based login system for both the primary and backup servers for ftp - annoying, as the backup's mysql config is just different enough to give a man fits. in the data directory rather than usr.

Beefy mac & cheese (made with veggie-meat, of course) with the remains of the rattatouile and green beans made for good eats while BHK and I watched the Kevin Sorbo episode of Middleman. The show keeps getting better and more entertianing... I wonder how long it'll last? I hope it'll keep steam going for another season.

I want to start watching Dexter - BHK is about a season ahead of me. Time to put episodes on the PSP for the commute to work.

Had the in-laws over for hot dogs and maybe the last good corn of the summer. Larry and Chris came over - Larry did corn while I worked the grill. BHK made a tasty chocolate-cheesecake mousse pie for dessert! good stuffs.

Thankfully, my tooth isn't being as bothersome as it was last week - the trip to Dr. Wolf seems ot have done the temporary trick - I go in for a temp crown the top of september, and two weeks after that, I get a permanent one.

Freecreditreport.com is NOT actually free, nor is it related to Annualcreditreport.com, the free credit report that you are entitled to under federal law. So why are people still being tricked into signing up for a credit monitoring service in order to get something that they are entitled to under federal-freaking-law? Because the credit bureaus are linking them to the website and most consumers don't believe that a major credit bureau would try to trick them. Always read the fine print! more here

Went to Aardvark and picked up Mosquito, Humans!!, and Toledo (BHK got comics - Archies 60's and Archies 70s, to go with her 80's book... and NYX.)

Mike kindly threw in a Zombie Fluxx flamethrower expansion pack... and we got a 1,2,5! card, too! I was surprised that we hadn't gotten that promo in the mail from the Looney Labs directly yet.. I'm glad Aardvark is looking out for us! May hang out with Mike & Tara sometime - brought 'em veggies from the garden - pickle salad recipes.

Went to the other Mexico restaurant... *that's* where the chef went! Food was great, and the decor was really sweet, too. It's usually a 7-8 at the other place, it was maybe a 8-9 at this location - a little hard to find from the road... there's another Mexican restaurant coming up on the corner - I fear that might mean trouble for Mexico's Lusby site.

While we were there, we spotted a neat kit-tricycle vehicle - see photos below. click to embiggen.

S6302127. S6302126. S6302125. S6302124. S6302123

We got home, and crashed out.. both BHK and I have been really fatigued lately... summer heat? I'm sure I left something out - I'll leave it to BHK to remind me.

Until Later, Dear journal.

Middleman, Monk and a combo of ratatouille, noodles and tofu patties for supper. Both BHK and were bushed tonight. Where has all of our energy gone?!

Ohh.. I thought my video card shipped, but really - "Status: Electronic Shipping Info Received

The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper on August 3, 2008 to expect your package for mailing. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date. Delivery status information will be provided if / when available. Information, if available, is updated every evening. Please check again later."

So... I can expect it later this week or next. RAM is going out tomorrow.

What the heck .... The Association of the Sovereign Order of the Temple of Christ (better known as the Knights Templar) have just launched a legal action against the Pope: among other things they want him to recognize the seizure of assets worth an estimated €100Bn, and restore the good name of the order. (More here.)

See... the whole National Treasure, Indiana Jones, Da Vinci code is coming back to bite folks on the tush now.
