Random Thought - My niece (via Momster's younger sis Diane & ) Inger is 17.... I can remember when she was born, and wore the candle headdress at age 4! How the heck did 13 years skip on by that fast?

We watched the most thinly-veiled possible telephone ad / infomercial on the tube last night.. Picture This. Poor Kevin Pollak. Ah well, I was happy just to relax on the couch and veg for a little while. Note - It is not a "hilarious coming of age teen comedy."

Mamihlapinatapai:considered the hardest word to translate.

It describes a look shared by two people with each wishing that the other will initiate something that both desire but which neither one wants to start. This could perhaps be translated more succinctly as "eye-contact implying 'after you...'". A more literal approximation is "ending up mutually at a loss as to what to do about each other".

Alan, JC, Denise, Tina, Matt, Chris, Larry - visited briefly by Adam, Joey, Jimmy, Amanda and Adam's School roommate next year (Mike? - No, Matt!) whose name I forget.

Special Guest was Chae-pooch! 10 year old chihuahua, looks like a little doll, but is feisty!

Fireworks were excellent - not as crowded as we expected.

Lunch at Tina's was good, despite the lateness - we can be a collective of procrastination... fortunately it is a known variable.

Spent the bulk of the day moving in our new couch, shelves and end tables - our house is looking more like a home and less like a dorm every day.

Mom contacted me re: my bro - it comes as no surprise (somewhat like agent "!".) - got to add another link to the mugshot page.

(Agent ! -

Known otherwise only as "Malcolm," a homeless man who dressed in a garish outfit decorated with exclamation marks (possibly referencing his predecessor, the Quiz) drawn back to reveal his chest is actually a gilded cage containing a miniature jet with bird-like feet. Despite his odd appearance, he "comes as no surprise," which allows him and anyone around him to be unnoticed or any attacks made by them to be seemingly out of nowhere. He mentions his desire to find the element of surprise, which may mean that his powers of "stealth" are not what he wants; Malcolm finds the element at last when dying during the final battle between the Brotherhood and the government.)

Once we got home, we settled in and watched the cats enjoying all the new surfaces to explore. Newt seems to like the couch and the low end tables, Pye likes the bookcases, and more "cubbyhole" sort of spots. There'll be more rearranging before the dust has settled, though.

We watched the first half of Astronaut Farmer while eating celebratory Chinese food - food was good, the movie was less than engaging for me.

Worn out, we're heading to bed early tonight.

Ah... Shots and then free as a bird.

Ice cream at Solomon's cone island - I got a soft serve mix chocolate and vanilla w/ chocolate jimmies (erm, sprinkles), and BHK got a small vanilla soft serve cone, dipped in a cherry shell. both were yummy.

Checked out bikes... it's going to be simpler to buy one than ship mine up from Florida, I think.

Hit Aardvark and picked up a few goodies - that place is habit-forming. We headed home to play our newly aquired treats.

got Hive - pieces bigger than expected (BHK won one, I won one)
got Kahuna - We've been playing this on Yucata.de for ages, and discovered there was a comfy form-factor - (BHK won)
got Katan Dice - missing pad, already sent for replacement. We'll play it next week.

Also picked up Archie in the 80's for BHK, and the umbrella academy trade for myself.

played If Wishes were Fishes finally - cute game, maybe a little clunky, but could be better once learned or with more players. (I won)

Arkham Horror is a lot more complex out of the box - we weren't looking to play a 2-4 hour game, so we saved that for another night. The other games could be picked up in 5 minutes played in 20 or so. Kahuna maybe twice that.

Next games for us to play from the game pile are canasta caliente, rook, killer bunnies, gloom, marriage material, and grave robbers from outer space

Went to Selby Sub Shoppe with in-laws - I got a veggie sub w/ seasoned fries, bhk got a chicken parm w/ smiley face potatoes, Larry a burger with crinkle cut fries, Chris a garlic white pizza.

Things seen on Thursday - a toy blimp at nice & fleasy antiques

BHK also saw some cute stuff at the library, including a mosquito wearing an I pod.

Sporepedia is already publicly accessible. This is the online field guide to all the creatures people have created with Spore, and the source from which the game will eventually populate the planets you play in with AI-controlled versions of the races people have made.

The incredible thing about Sporepedia is that those thumbnail images you see are the creature files. Drag that image right from your browser to the game window, and it loads that creature in all its scampering glory. The creature’s DNA is actually coded into the metadata of a 25 kilobyte PNG image. Getting quite a bit better - still have a rattle in my chest and more coughing but the muscle aches and weakness is mostly gone. I'd say I'm currently firing on five out of eight cylinders.

A/c is now fully charged again - the repairman said that we'd be really baking without any refrigerant by Friday night. I'm glad BHK was there to explain what had been going on to him.

Tried calling my brother today - his voicemail is full. I haven't heard from him since he was last bailed out. His hearing for the latest is in a week - I see in the public records that something was dismissed based on "Lack of Prosecution". Not sure if it's the same item, though. I need to research Thomas A Reynolds, it seems. Looks like his thing is real estate - probably an eviction notice long since passed.

BHK made ratatouille for dinner tonight, and the stars aligned for the movie to be playing on TV while we ate. Larry stuck with some pasta and sauce... BHK gave him some bake and eat tempura shrimp, too... He doesn't know what he missed... zucchini, eggplant, tomato sauce, some olive oil in there... it was really good stuff.

I love that I can still learn new words and phrases every day.

via dnw - Scientists discover how optical illusions work. All of them.

The short version: It takes a tenth of a second for images to get from your retina to the processing centres of your brain. People have known this for decades, but we still see things in real time.

The new theory says that what we're seeing isn't what's there, it's what our brain projects will be there in a tenth of a second - our brain is processing predicatively, showing us it's best guess for the future. And that's why optical illusions can fool it, by confusing it into predicting a future that then doesn't happen.

Had a lovely time shopping for Alan's b'day present wrapping after my standard morning's shots. Got a haircut (contrary to photo, I don't plan on gelling it into a faux-hawk regularly), Lunched at Ledo's, but I think the stop off at *$ for a little coffee drink took gave BHK a bit of sourbelly, so we headed home, napped and listened to the gumball-sized hail fall unexpectedly from the sky. (There were also tornado warnings, but no sign of that.)

The weather eased while we waited for the in-laws to get ready for the party... we were aiming for a launch time of about 5pm, and we left circa 6:40. Fortunately, we took Chris's eternal case of time dilation into account, so we got there only about 10 minutes late.

Alan's party was nice - quite a diverse group of people there, drunks and non-drunks - I finally got to meet JC and Mamacita, but Mamacita didn't bring her Chihuahua with - maybe next time. I'd say the little house had about 50 people in it at prime time - they hired a doorman, bartender, and a few waiters - but it was a truly casual and pleasant outing... not a lot of seating, but standing wasn't bad, thanks to my epidural earlier in the week.

He didn't open his goodies - his true b'day is Sunday... I imagine he'll like the blooming tea.

Tina and Matt were there - looks like Matt's losing some weight - Good for him!

memento (searching memory)
Dreamt last night that we were touring a pair of Monasteries - Tibetan style, Buddhist things. Apparently, I wasn't too interested in the firs tone, and had to rush to the second before the bell rang - doors would lock and wild dogs tore apart anyone not inside one of the two feuding temples when the bells summoned them.

The ground between the two buildings slid and shifted... I (much more nimbly than I might've in waking life) leaped from stepping stone to stepping stone, avoiding too-clear water that was running thickly, like syrup. Once on the second place's stairs, the dogs curled up and went to sleep.

The building itself was very nifty - all sorts of oddities inside, not unlike a Ripley's. One was closed off with a curtain - a skeletal mammoth with an elephant-sized, but human shaped skull - save for a single tusk/horn curling upwards from the tip of the chin area of the mandible. I went to take a picture of it, but a guard (I don't recall his garb - if he was a mall security type or a warrior-sort.. I just knew he worked there, wasn't just some guy) told me that it was forbidden. He then smiled at me, took a picture with his cell phone and was promptly gored by the skeleton. The tusk tore a rip in him from crotch to throat and where he opened up, rose petals fell until the body was just an empty skin.

A different member of the monestary showed up and apologized to me - I couldn't attend service, because the priest was shorter than me. However another fellow, taller than me would be available to walk me through services on Tuesday, at 8:30. I asked if he meant morning or night, and he laughed... "Don't you work? - it's at night.. it'll be 8:30 pm to 10pm, then there'll be snacks, bell ringing and wheel turning. Does your wife dance?"

I said that she did, though we really have never been.

I've never been to a Tibetan monastery... now, I suspect that I'll be a bit disappointed.

After telling her about it, BHK says that I'll never get hot dogs grilled with onions and green peppers for dinner again. I hope that's not the case.

Microsoft's not only delaying Windows XP SP3 temporarily, but they're also pulling off Windows Vista SP1—which has already been pushed out to automatic software update—because of potential incompatibilities. Most of us don't need to worry about it since this is just an issue with MS's SQL Servers that affect Microsoft Dynamics Retail management systems. Unless you're running a SQL database at home to track the chore distribution for your family, you can go ahead and manually fetch the update and install it yourself.

Britishink will be be recreating a working Victorian Tattoo Parlour, complete with a display of the history of tattooing, machines, art, and tattoo related photography. If you want to be part of the art, they can accommodate you and tattoo you there. I think it's neat that most maypoles are made of maple. I have no idea of the origin of the word maple, but somehow I doubt it's due to the holiday.

And so, April comes to an end. Seeya next year, April! Wasn't too bad of one this year, all told. Some stresses, some solutions... it seems to have come and gone fairly rapidly.

Was I just doing taxes 2 weeks ago? It seems like months. I'm still getting the occasional treat at http://drop.io/scottobear , feel free to drop something off, or pick something up. I removed the m4ps, but the mp3 music is still out there.

Had the in-laws over - BHk made pseudo-beef stroganoff, baked zucchini and corn on the cob - a fine dinner which caused me to consume with gusto... and too much.

Back was doing pretty well until I hit the sack - laying straight caused some medium discomfort. I think I'll take my night meds a half hour before bed for maximum ease.

ATW man is just sitting on the roof.. waiting for the owner to come up with a new plan, I guess... Mother's Day is coming... maybe we'll get to see his mama!

Also shown, our dancing robots, captured in the wee hours of the morning. I think that the designers gave the girl a lot more personality, but I think that they're both very cute.

Oh, I forgot one - speaking of robots - the Wall-E bench.

A google search for scottobear homebrew gives about 86 results. So, BHK - I do use the term homebrew every here and there! neener neener. Funny thing is that BHK did a search independent of mine, and got a more valid result of about 31. She just thinks it's a funny word for me to use.

spear fishing ape

A male orangutan, clinging precariously to overhanging branches, flails the water with a pole, trying desperately to spear a passing fish.

It is the first time one has been seen using a tool to hunt.

The extraordinary image, a world exclusive, was taken in Borneo on the island of Kaja, where apes are rehabilitated into the wild after being rescued from zoos, private homes or even butchers' shops.

"Orang hutan" means "forest man" in one of Indonesia's many languages and our long-armed cousins do indeed show a remarkable ability to mimic our behaviour.

This individual had seen locals fishing with spears on the Gohong River.

Although the method required too much skill for him to master, he was later able to improvise by using the pole to catch fish already trapped in the locals' fishing lines.

The image is part of a series taken for a new book, The Thinkers Of The Jungle, which also includes the first photograph of an orangutan swimming.

Thinkers Of The Jungle, by Gerd Schuster, Willie Smits and Jay Ullal, is published by Ullmann Publishing on May 5.

40 faces
Addendum - Fab brew was closed - no muffin or coffee (why close for inventory on a *Sunday*???) - instead we got lunch in Deale. From there we brought the in-laws lemon cake and pie (chirs prefers cake, larry, the latter)... a brief stop off turned into a 4 hour pause of enjoying movies, petting Tigger and eating Chinese food. Not too shabby!

Napoleon Dynamite is not my thing, though. Too much irony, not enough wit for me.

After our eats, we returned home to laze about a bit more - BHK beat me at Balloon Cup, and it grew too late for If Wishes were Fishes.

Short and sweet, dear journal!

BHK made stuffed cabbage last night... it was super yummo. I was a bit cranky and creaky watching Enchanted with her and the In-laws... the movie had a couple of cute bits in it, but was pretty cut-and-paste throughout. No real surprises, short of the animal bits, which I liked the most. City-animal summoning was keen... Flies were more disconcerting than roaches, I think.

Today BHK is meeting me at work for a little lunch picnic on the lawn downstairs... It's supposed to be mid-70s and sunny!

Thank you, anonymous commenter for the pancakes video.

Best quote heard recently - "Trust in God, but tie your camel to the post." (I've heard it before, but not in conversation.)

On religion- recently got a link to a church furniture store via Newtcam. Slogan - Do you know the difference between a good pew and a bad pew?

Scientists say the Earth gives off a low, constant hum. The origin of the hum is a mystery, but it drives Mars freaking nuts.

There’s a lovely and surprising piece in the NY Times Arts section disguised as yet another article on the China Tibet issue and the Olympic torch relay. The piece points out that the torch relay originated with the Nazis. It was a bit of stagecraft thought up by Carl Diem and filmed by Leni Riefenstahl for her 1938 hymn to Aryan supremacy, Olympia. The Wagnerian imagery is mythic: within a landscape of Greek ruins, a naked and pure human specimen holds a javelin as it is lit by a bowl of fire, and then transports the burning torch to the Rhineland—well, the symbolism is pretty obvious.
