Dave Nelson, Adam, Anna and the in-laws came over for a visit last night and some nom noms on the day before the day before the big day of gluttony-type behavior.

We played a boatload of jungle speed and nibbled on pigs in blankets, and those cream cheese wraps that BHK has continued to develop into super tasty treats.

Much fun was had by all – I prefer playing the dorky warthog more than the lion or rhino, now. Adam is almost always monkey (Unless BHK had it), while Anna was Tigress, and Dave was Hippo. We need to get more controllers so we can play more than 4 at a time! fortunately, the game allows 2 per controller/nun chuck.

Adam and Anna are sleeping over – everyone else is close enough to home to get kicked out come snoozeville.

William, Bryce, Dominic, Dalton, (and Donnie , but he was outside, and didn't come in) came over for a surprise visit and afternoon of Wii gaming. It seems that Bryce and William's own Wii was broken, and so they figured they'd swing by our place for some goofing around and general fun.

Bryce was the rare talent today - creamed us at Wii bowling and barely lost mario party 8.... not to mention being a surprise champ at Hey, That's my fish, and Labyrinth.

It was a pleasant, though chaotic visit... the kids were all very well mannered. They all just piled out of the house to go home to dinner.

(Damien wasn't here tonight, but he did check out haunted.scottobear.com for the Callis Haunted Adventure earlier this week.

In other gaming news, I won mario party 8 and blokus at the Nailles on Friday night -- the trophy is ours once more!

Gaming with The Nailles, Philomena, Ana - Apples to Apples

yet another quiz -

Rules: Don't take too long to think about it. Fifteen tv series you've seen all/most of the episodes of that will always stick with you. Series you have bought/would buy on DVD if money was no object. First fifteen you can recall in no more than fifteen minutes.

Tag fifteen friends, including me because I'm interested in seeing what shows my friends choose.

1. MiddleMan
it just came out on dvd recently! what are we waiting for?
2. Gorilla Girl
doesn't really exist, but it should. (ok, ok - I'll put Probe in there - Parker Stevenson needs the money, and I dug it)
3. Rockford Files
A PI that gets beaten up, and isn't smarter than everyone else.
4. Red Dwarf
Got to love it. No alien life, just stuff from earth. Droid crewmen, hologram crew, way before star trek.
5. Bonanza / Big Valley / Rifleman
They all should be in the same universe.
6. The Dick van Dyke show
Still Great, every time I see it. Beware of alien walnuts!
7. Andy Griffith
Just the black and white episodes.
8. The Complete Dr. Who collection
Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker vs the new guys should be fun viewing.
9. Ugly Betty
BHK got me into this, and it may be jumping the shark now, but I really enjoyed the first couple of seasons
10. Ripley's Belive it or not
- starring Superman or Curly, either are ok by me.
11. M*A*S*H
Have to steal this from Kath - I really liked the mix of drama and humor a lot.
12. The Prisoner -
thanks to Ray and Kath for this one - I actually own it and secret agent on dvd already.
13. sesame street / electric company / Mr. Rogers neighborhood -
brilliant songs and nostalgia - they cannot be split apart
14. Black Sheep Squadron / Tales of the gold monkey
- my love of corsairs / seaplanes started here.
15. Night court
wonderfully surreal - the green acres of the 80s

Honorable mention: green acres / petticoat junction / hercules & xena /quincy m.e. / mannix / banacek

Hard to believe it's only been 3 years since I was first planning to visit BHK on her birthday. Funny to me how little I can think of life prior to being married to her, and having our crew of four under the roof.

I'm in the office now, taknig a brief break from gig-searching to catch myself up on LJ. Larry is setting up BHK's Best Birthday Present Ever (tm)- a widening of the closet door in our bedroom. For the record, I also proposed to BHK on her birthday, 3 years ago in two weeks. Heck, she'd have wanted closet spasce, even if single.

33333333333333333333333333333333  - Newton's left foot on the number pad says hello. Pye is sleeping on the purple chair to my left, and Netwon has leapt to the couch on my right (newtcam couch) and will be in sleepytown soon.

Here's a breakdown of my music via Media Go -

music layout

According to my SenseMe playlist - the fastest/happiest song is a three way tie -

  • Get a Job - The English Beat

  • The Famous Polka - They Might Be Giants

  • B-52s Cosmic Thing.

Slowest Saddest songs are also a 3-way tie -

  • Matt Lauer can suck it - Michael Gaicchino (Land of the Lost Soundtrack)

  • Running to the Rain - Peter Gabriel

  • Ballero - War

I seem to have mostly happy, mid-speed songs in my library.

I am really interested in a few new looney labs releases - Aquarius 2.0 and Chrononauts: The Gore Years expansion

(Chrononauts 1.4 The Gore Years: Like Aquarius, Chrononauts is also about to get upgraded to the new uniform box. But although it will feature a couple of new cards and a new rulesheet, the new edition of Chrononauts won't be very different from the original. For this reason, and since it's the fourth printing, they've decided to call it version 1.4. However, since a lot has happened since 1999 and Chrononauts is really showing its age, theyere also creating an expansion product that brings the TimeLine into the 21st Century. This packet of 11 cards will feature 5 new Timeline cards (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2008) along with 3 new Patches and 3 new characters who need to change recent events in order to get home. (Of course, it's called the Gore Years because that's what the last 8 years are known as to certain time travelers.). Release date: October 23th.
(Martian Fluxx, too, but not as much as the other two)

Additionally - I'd like to try Apophis sometime as a game. Looks neat, and I have all the pieces already to play!

BHK and Mandy out today - they headed to Annapolis and went shopping at Sephora (got makeovers) , Lush (nice smelly soaps), some sammiches at selby, coffee at fab brew.

I stayed home, in fear for my testosterone... Instead, I opted to stretch out my back, I put in 2.5 miles around the neighborhood... it was cloudy, so weather was cooler. After the first half-mile, I was able to stand up straight, and the walk became rather comfortable... I visited the candy store and picked up BHK a praline and some gummy soda-bottles to share along with my primary goal of a bottle of water. At the post office, paperback swap sent me (c/o BHK)  The Vesuvius Club (not the graphic edition, just the novel) and Song of Kali - I look forward to reading them both.

Later that afternoon, I gabbed, watched some Bones and played some phase 10 with Chris - The girls brought us home some selby subs - steak and cheese for Chris, uber-veggie for me!

Chris and I are planning to hit the gym sometime soon - it'll be nice to do some weight training / back strengthening with another guy who knows what I'm dealing with.

He had to do the news starting at 4am tomorrow, so Chris hit the sack at about about 7:30 - BHK and I headed back home (across the street).

Laid back and we played a lot of DS (BHK) and PSP (me) while watching the finale of Burn Notice - we were both rather underwhelmed about the summer closer. Hopefully Psych will take up the slack.

Back is complaining now about the earlier walkies. I forgot to mention that I went with the old gps - made some waypoints - kitten safari, bus stops, etc.

Upon looking at my spinning Scotto heroclix icon... I think I have to update and make a new one for myself, BHK, Newton and Pye.

Got BHK her Birthday present a month early - a green DS lite, with a copy of treasure world. Bugah got a copy too - it's a pretty addictive game, and it's fun to drive around listening for found "treasure" while sightseeing areas you might otherwise not go.

Bugah got me back into playing with the PSP, too. MediaGo is a great improvement over the old media player/data transfer. Put a few episodes of the wire on the PSP for the Sleep Study coming up.

Scheduled my sleep study in about a week - new CPAP will be soon to follow. It'll be the first night since we got married that BHK and I won't be in the same bed. I doubt I'll sleep very easily without her nearby.

Well, Back to life as a couple, rather than a trio- Bugah made it home safe and sound yesterday morning, We had the Nailles over last night for a little game night - mario party 8 and pizza. We're going to have to recreate those once our garden gives us a few spuds.

After, we visited twilite zone comics and then games and stuff - got micro mutants. Wargame with a tiddlywinks mechanic. looks fun!

Lunch/ Dinner at Gina's Cantina - then off to Sam's club - It turns out that my card from work got understandably canceled - semi annoying since it took a year to get the thing, but it was deactivated withing a week of departing. trouble of a yearly schedule, I suppose.

Tomorrow I do a callback for Georgetown gig? Wish me luck, dear journal!

Nokia developing phone that recharges itself without mains electricity
A new prototype charging system from the company is able to power itself on nothing more than ambient radio waves - the weak TV, radio and mobile phone signals that permanently surround us. The power harvested is small but it is almost enough to power a mobile in standby mode indefinitely without ever needing to plug it into the mains, according to Markku Rouvala, one of the researchers who developed the device at the Nokia Research Centre in Cambridge, UK.

The difference with Nokia's prototype is that instead of harvesting tiny amounts of power (a few microwatts) from dedicated transmitters, Nokia claims it is able to scavenge relatively large amounts of power -- around a thousand times as much -- from signals coming from miles away. Individually the energy available in each of these signals is miniscule. But by harvesting radio waves across a wide range of frequencies it all adds up, said Rouvala.

The trick here is to ensure that these circuits use less power than is being received, said Rouvala. So far they have been able to harvest up to 5 milliwatts. Their short-term goal is to get in excess of 20 milliwatts, enough power to keep a phone in standby mode indefinitely without having to recharge it. But this would not be enough to actually use the phone to make or receive a call, he says. So ultimately the hope is to be able to get as much as 50 milliwatts which would be sufficient to slowly recharge the battery.

Cinco De Mayo... Cheers! We had ratatouille and baked potato for supper. (But the bagel I ate had jalapenos on it!)

Contemplating going to Bengie's Drive-in this weekend. Triple feature of Fanboys, Monsters vs. Aliens and Star Trek a fun, dorky night.
I'm not sure though - I'd prefer to see MvsA in 3-d.

Talked to Danny on the phone tonight - he might be jumping into a game of Champions at his local game store this summer. 150 points - the store used to be the Dragon's Lair, but it's now Adventure something or another.

Bro sent me a text from his new phone - I'll call him tomorrow and see how he sounds. I'm sure he's happy to be out and about.

No Franklin again this morning - I noticed that the lawn was treated with chemicals - hopefully that kept him away, along with the cold, drizzly rain.

Pull in your tum,
stick out your tush,
wiggle your hips,
now give 'em a push

Godspeed, Captain Chaos
As I was starting to say, I'm glad it's staying a bit rainy and cool outside... I'm probably the only one who is loving a little soft, cool rain over sun and heat. I'm a hairy, big beast... hm, an excuse for another old Ditko picture, I think, dear journal.

I played a little bit of Fallout 3 this afternoon while waiting for the in-laws to show up for supper - pigs in blankets!

Once they got here, I got a telephone call from my mom - just gabbed a bit, but when I came back out, the in-laws were ready to take off. I guess they weren't too into The Fall.   BHK and I liked it - I really enjoyed just staring through it - nifty costumes and sets.

Photos from this evening. Featuring snow that looks like ping pong balls in the light of a flash, blue lit room due to pausing the tv, and a phantom kiss from BHK due to a long shutter opening. Also seen is the "Rosy Glow" due to light diffraction outside.

Funny to me that we get more snow on the first day of March than the rest of winter combined. Looks like about 8 inches tonight... powdery, no crust... like confectioners sugar with some glitter tossed in for effect. Maybe tomorrow will be a "Snow Day" and I can work from home!

I really like the Prince George's Plaza Metro station, even if it is in a fairly rough neck of the woods.

0224091804.jpg

The whole place is just a neat design... lots of concrete, textures and angles hidden everywhere. I have half a mind to design a Counterstrike level for it. (Like I have that kind of time - Too many other things occupying my life to spend 30 hours building a level that will never get any play.

A pity it wasn't one of the locations used in Fallout 3.

After work today, it was off to get our overdue weekly luxury of soda pop and two $1 scratch off tickets - results were the standard "we didn't win anything, let's drown our sorrows in a diet cherry dr pepper"

So.. What did I give up for lent? Just a bit of sloth, I think. I'm going to shoot for more vigorous walkies and getting back on my regular exercise regimen.

BHK made some tasty noodles w/ peas, broccoli and "meatballs" in a cream sauce. Good hearty stuff - Enough to take some with me to work tomorrow for lunch!

Hap-Pye New(t) Year!

Something I post at the top of every new year, and I appreciate the words more with every additional trip around the sun.

Love is
is not rude,
it is not self seeking,
it is not easily angered,
it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil
but rejoices in truth.
It always protects,
always trusts,
always hopes,
always perseveres.

-1 Corinthians 13:5&6

453 entries in 2008. (417 in '07,618 in '06, 975 in '05, 716 in '04)

At this rate, I'll break 10,000 entries by this time next year... of course, some entries are beefier than others.. I've been cheating a bit with the picture posts - still haven't done a breakdown of my holiday loot yet!

But for now, a recap of recent history -

BHK took Amy to Urgent care last night, as her dog bite was getting more infected - worried about swelling and red marks. While they were at the doc's, Shaun and I played Easter Island (I won!), and watched Bones on TV with my in-laws. The girls got back about 45 minutes later, and Amy's wound was freshly cleaned and re-wrapped with gauze.

After the ball dropped, the in-laws headed off, and the rest of us played witch trial into the wee hours. (BHK took that one, but Amy wasn't far behind. I really thought I would win! d'oh!)

Amy, Shaun W, BHK, the in-laws and I rose at about 10am, (after staying up until 3ish) and headed off to Gina's Cantina for a nibble on some tasty brunch. No sign of Tyson or Gina, but the food was tasty and abundant, as usual.

BHK napped a bit and then did some work while Amy & I play Lego star wars / Mario Land 8 on the wii for about 4 hours. I feel pretty guilty about that - I wish we had another controller, or could have played something amongst the three of us.

Amy grew concerned about her issue - BHK went out to get some fresh bandages for her, and if she doesn't feel significantly better by tomorrow morning, she'll probably head home.

My earache also started kicking up - could not eat dinner tonight as it hurt to chew. Going to the doc tomorrow, so my appointment timing is good.

Not much today - BHK sick and sleeps, I play fallout 3 and do net-research.

Fallout-wise, I'm doing my best not to get slaughtered by "centaurs" and super mutants at the base of the now "heavily weathered"  washington monument. Brotherhood of steel there.

Perhaps more to follow once BHK wakes up. I hope she feels better soon!

Friday!

Date night! Where are we off to? Christmas Lights in Annapolis, I think. I'm looking forward to a nice weekend with BHK - it seem slong overdue.

--
I suspect that JJ Abrams will make it tough for me to interest BHK in the new star Trek movie. (She wasn't too crazy about Cloverfield... or Lost. or Fringe... or.. ) For that matter, I gave up on Season 2 of Lost, episode 1 of Fringe, and Swarm of the Snakehead is more my idea of a fun monster movie than Cloverfield. - all of which fairly split me from most of the Science Fiction fans out there.

However, I still want to see the new trek, even if it is 90210 in outer space, with Winona Ryder, and Bana as a Romulan with a Scottish Accent. I think I've got her sold on the gal who plays uhura and the guy from Harold and kumar.

misc thoughts recently, most from today -

Scott is ready for date night!

Scott is impressed by sublimation. (
It is a common experience to observe the disappearance of snow from the ground even though the temperature is below the freezing point and liquid water is never present.)

Scott believes that any tool is a weapon if you hold it right. (and vice versa).

Scott frequently prefers leftovers to the first time "put on the plate" food.

Scott loves working on the 11th floor. Snow is falling UP past my window.

Scott wouldn't bother with silver bullets to fight werewolves. Silver buckshot, maybe.

Valve was offering Half-Life for just 98¢ in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the company's debut title - I had to pick it up - I'm only a decade behind for not playing it! Even my brother had it for about 2 years, and I just never got around to it.

Friday- nice to see it back again. It was foggy beyond belief yesterday, and continues today.

Last night's supper of Chinese food from the Octagon was pretty good - I only wish they hadn't packaged the general tso's tofu in such a way that I got it all over my work pants and jacket while driving home.

Back was tweaking up something fierce - I wonder if the barometric pressure was a factor, or all that fog?

BHK is using her super legal-powers to help with the condo issues - looks like we might get this thing ironed out after all!

While she looked up condo legal-ese, I did some back stretches,  overdue computer stuff, and checked out the demo of Left4Dead... that's a beautiful game right there. The artwork is pretty top notch, and I really like the team play aspect. That'll probably be my next purchase afte rI swim through Fallout 3 some more. Maybe someday I'll get around to finishing the later episodes of HL2.

In other gaming news, BHK picked me up a new gaming joystick via freecycle. Can't beat free hardware!

This weekend, we are likely to skip JohnCon, and instead go to Geppi's Entertainment Museum. (I wonder if my metropass will count for $2 OFF GO GREEN! Show your ticket stub for public transportation for that day and receive $2 off admission to Geppi’s Entertainment Museum.)

Lunch today of "chicken" nuggets and mac&cheese was dang tasty. perfect for a cool, misty day

Got off work, and the Element has recovered from the hit we took from the deer. It still smells a bit of paint, but looks good as new.

Traffic was HORRID today. It took us forever to get anywhere!

BHK, Larry, Chris and I went to Selby - I guess the owners are looking to retire, sadly. I guess we had better get the pizza while we can!

Both Hurricane Electric and Global Crossing pulled the plug today after a damning report revealed a number of illegal activities happening on McColo’s servers.
