Telecommuted in today -some slight bumps when Comcast passed out on us, but it was restored quickly enough, and I had the fallback of the cellular modem if I needed it.
Epidural went ok, painful, but hopefully productive. I got a bit panicked when I read the release forms this time (My heart rate went from 134/68 to 164/99 and back down to 139/95, once I focused. My average heart rate is still 119/79. - I certainly didn't want to die as the result of a pain block, and once gave myself a little self-awareness, everything worked out for the best. I spoke with the doc about my rattling lungs, and he gave me a cursory look - it seems like they're doing ok now, and the cough should be history soon.
Went to Mexico for a very late lunch (maybe 4?) and I chowed down, as I had to fast for the procedure. BHK didn't eat very much, but she had a little nibble in the morning.
Swung by verison for a replacement holster, but they said it'd take at least a half hour to review records and check on the receipt.. we didn't want to lurk that long, as my anesthetic was beginning to wear off and it was time to head home.
Saw the finale of Farmer wants a wife, and he took the better of the remaining options open to him, I think. i'll be interested if he comes back next year for "farmer wants a divorce" and / or "farmer wants a baby." Hell's Kitchen wasn't bad, down to two people I find interesting and both seem talented.

Tomorrow I go to the doctor for a review and another epidural. Hopefully I'll get a lead on something for my nagging cough.
Went to go see the Hulk movie (I'm sleeping in until 7:30 tomorrow, so I can pull it off) - It was a whole lot better than what I was expecting. BHK liked the movie more than Iron Man, and I am certainly more sympathetic to Banner - I feel that Iron Man was better acted and had better effects, but Hulk was more enjoyable overall - I didn't mind the CGI Hulk and Abomination at all.
Watched the 2nd episode of Middleman, and it was a lot smoother than the pilot. I'm enjoying it so far.
Nasty thought, resulting from last weekend's dining out - "Crab dip stuffed crust pizza". I bet it would make a mint along the Chesapeake... sprinkle a little old bay seasoning on the pie, and I suspect that you've got Maryland gold.... and I've got a tummy ache just thinking about it.
Joke of the day -
Well, BHK thought it was funny, dear journal.

The saying is something like: "Don't ever come between a Mother and her babies"Well, here in Calverton, it's proving to be true. There is a Mother Eastern Kingbird nesting in one of the trees in the back parking lot (*)that has felt a little threatened by some of our staff members. She'seven attacked a few staff members. (thankfully, they are OK)(*)She's in one of the trees at the right of the rear entrance in thefirst island that is parallel with the building. Currently, 8:45 a.m,there is a black truck parked near "her" tree.PLEASE DO YOUR BEST TO STAY AWAY FROM THAT TREE AREA AND LET HER HATCHHER BABIES. WE DON'T WANT ANYONE HURT BY HER PROTECTIVE INSTINCT AND WEDEFINITELY DON'T WANT HER TO ABANDON HER NEST.Kate Flint did some research and found out some facts about EasternKingbirds:* The Eastern Kingbird is highly aggressive toward nest predatorsand larger birds. Hawks and crows are attacked regularly. Akingbird was observed to knock a Blue Jay out of a tree and cause it tohide under bush to escape the attack. * During the summer the Eastern Kingbird eats mostly flyinginsects and maintains a breeding territory that it defends vigorouslyagainst all other kingbirds. In the winter along the Amazon, however, ithas a completely different lifestyle: it travels in flocks and eatsfruit. * Parent Eastern Kingbirds feed their young for about seven weeks.Because of this relatively long period of dependence, a pair generallyraises only one brood of young per nesting season.http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Eastern_Kingbird.html1 year ago - voice post, pictures of Danny, BHK and me, sea shells and fountains and a truck

Happy Father's Day! Beware the Ides of June!
Had a lovely breakfast at the in-laws. Got Larry a pair of nice cards, and a Micheal Buble' album. He seemed to dig 'em!
Lar made pancakes on the grill's skillet - they were fantastic... and the weather in the morning wasn't super hot... quite nice, actually. We sat on the deck and watched the birds of prey go fishing in the bay - one took off with a giant meal afte ronly a quick glance and dive. Post breakfast, we went into the house and listened to his new CD - it was OK - but I had been feeling rather ragged and zonked out on the recliner until BHK noted we had to go and grab groceries for the cookout later on.
I slept in the car as BHK shopped - we had to turn around at one point, as we'd thought that Adam and Joey weren't coming - we had to grab more dogs, buns, chips and soda-pop to keep the teens fed and happy.
I napped more at home, while BHK made Larry a blueberry/blackberry pie (and one for us at the house, too!)
Everyone showed up at about 7, I grilled meat for the team, Chris brought baked beans and slaw, BHK set everything up, and we ate like we'd just gotten the first meal in days. The folding chairs are going to get a lot of use this summer, I think.
It went well, and as the sun went down, the gang headed out and the sights and sounds of the evening began to rise up... frogs ribbiting, mosquitoes buzzing and nibbling, and fireflies lighting up the garden like dozens of will-o-wisps. we went inside, as the frogs were too busy singing to eat up all of the mosquitoes - the biters didn't stop other folks outside from lighting off roman candles and other fireworks. Maybe the smoke acts as a repellent?
Things seen yesterday and today -
we went to the bitter end - What's the asterisk mean?

Tonight, someone was shooting off fireworks, and some got caught on newtcam. In North Beach, any holiday is a good excuse for pyrotechnics.
Arbor day? Sure! National Pen-pal day? Heck, Why not?
I am feeling better a bit now that the day is about done - I think the nap may've stiffened my back more than help. Next time, perhaps just a sitting rather than a flat-out snooze will be best. I didn't dwell much on my own father today...just as well, really.

Was a bit sicker in the am, but was feeling better by midday. It seems that mornings are the most difficult now, post sleep and shower. One day until Friday!

Today is Buddy's Wake - Adam's grandfather didn't make it, sadly.
More fruit from the blueberry plant! Had a little nibble on them with lunch today, in yogurt.
We also have eggplant blossoms, two peppers coming in nicely and tons of squash, bean and potato blossoms!
scribbls - a fun little doodle/game thing. (most faved is worth a peek) - I suspect that Kat will dig it, with that tablet!

Today, I got sicker, bleah. Pains and stresses at an all time yuck factor.
Watched Old San Fransisco , assorted tv, and slept most of the day. BHK and I took a walk in the sun to try and loosen stuff up for about 45 minutes (or about a mile and a half) and while I think fresh air helps... I was more than ready to go rest afterward. For some reason, our water bottles tasted like onion.
A/C broken - house bounces between 80 and 95 degrees inside, depending on time of day. Fortunately, we have lots of ceiling fans, and the loft has a window-shaker unit, so the kitties, BHK and I won't bake too badly as long as we stay upstairs.
thinking about my sweetheart, BHK - some savage garden -

Maybe it's intuition
but some things you just don't question
Like in your eyes, I see my future in an instant
And there it goes,
I think I found my best friend
I know that it might sound
more than a little crazy
but I believe...
I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life
There's just no rhyme or reason
Only the sense of completion
And in your eyes, I see
the missing pieces I'm searching for
I think I've found my way home
I know that it might sound
more than a little crazy
but I believe...
I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life

Bugah's baseball game is today - didn't drive out to VA to see him - both BHK and I love that kid to death, but we're both too sick to go up there and spread our germs to the little ones - that said, we did go to the doc for a shot.
Got shots, we played Yahtzee on the pda three times while I waited for clearance to leave, bhk does better than me in general, but I got her 2/3 games this time.
Hit the yard sale in front of the firehouse on the way home - BHK got a pair of books, something by Moning [edit - it was Darkfever ] (Highlander something) and The 13th Tale.
After a bit of rest, we decided to head to Aardvark, and picked up Arkham Horror, Grave Robbers From Outer Space and Marriage Material (as well as vol 2 of Irredeemable Ant-man, and Vol 2 of New Frontier.)
I started feeling much more poorly Saturday night - BHK is sick, and I have a severe cough, a fluid-filled chest, muscle aches, and back pain.
We started to do a puzzle, but I couldn't even stay seated at the table.... so I flopped in front fo the TV and half-watched until we tucked in, at about 9 pm.
On a lighter note - we got our first nibs and nabs from the garden!
Blueberry ... first eats produced this season by our plants... picture taken with cell phone.
Who was part of breakfast that day... but his brothers and sisters later became part of this -

BHK and I may go see The Fall tonight... I also I really want to see Son of Rambow before it leaves the theaters, too. We'll see how we feel after dinner.
So.. it's June already! Second day and so far, so good. Maybe we'll buy a bicycle today!

A bachelor in the Japanese town of Kasuya, concerned that he was the victim of serial burglary, installed security cameras in his home. Instead he discovered that a woman had been living on the top shelf of his closet for over a year.
An enormous Antarctic iceberg will be known as “Melting Bob” after being named by a Hampshire schoolboy.
From ABC News:

A University of Melbourne team has broken new ground, extracting genes from the extinct tasmanian tiger and bringing them back to life in another living creature.
The team put the thylacine DNA into a mouse embryo in what the university’s Dr Andrew Pask says is the first time DNA from an extinct species has been used “to induce a functional response in another living organism.”
The thylacine DNA reproduced in the mouse’s body and showed biological function, reviving hopes that the tiger may one day be successfully cloned.

Adam's grandfather is in a bad way - he was sent to the hospital last weekend, was looking better on Tuesday, not as good yesterday. I hope he hangs in there, and mends up... at his age and level of health, I suspect he may be about done.
Was a bit sick this morning - nervous about the epidural , maybe... or low blood sugar. No food after 8am, minimal sips of water if needed. Still pretty sore afterward, but I should feel a lot bette rni the next few days.
BHK made Thai for me last night - make my last meal before the fast a good one. Green Curry veggies over rice, with a side of tofu in peanut sauce. The lady knows what I like to eat. After the epidural, we got Mexican - it was good, but I couldn't finish my plate. Leftovers lasted until about 9pm.

"A team at the university of Pittsburgh has finally advanced a 2002 technology enough for use in prosthetic limbs, the targeted application all along. Training computer models to the firing patterns of the neurons in the parts of the brain that control motion, they are able to project the intentions of a monkey to a robotic arm, which follows the will of the animal. The sad thing about the articles is that the beauty of the mathematics used to create and train the models is totally ignored."

Dick Martin died. Why does this make me feel bad or nostalgic? Laugh-in was old hat before I was born, but I loved seeing it on Nick at Nite.
Forgot to mention the awesome sub/pizza shop discovered on Saturday. Selby Sub Shoppe - found when we took a wrong turn looking for Thai food. Best mistake we could've made. Larry was especially happy that he didn't have to consume anything involving curry or green beans. He got chicken wings, while BHK, Chris and I gobbled down some white pizza... with red sauce on the side.
So good. Also good was the lemon coconut cake, lemon pie, chocolate mousse pie and the lemon cookies. We seem to have an inordinate amount of lemon fondness in our desserts.

Dreamt last night of being at the Disney lagoon - BHK and I were swimming with giant sharks, eels - no fish was smaller than half my size, most of them were between 30-40 feet long. At one point I was kidnapped, and was told that if I escaped, my entire family would be killed. I grabbed the person and immobilized him by snapping his arms and legs off like dried twigs - when I went to finish him, the police showed up and told me that his brain shouldn't be damaged, as they needed it to ge tthe information on how he would hurt folks. I didn't care to see him live, but I relented - though only if I could pack his head with salt and ash. That was ok with the police, who decapitated him, and put his noggin in a clear tube for analysis... the head was somehow still alive, but as long as he couldn't speak, he couldn't hurt us... some sort of vampire, or lich, maybe?

If you were falling, then I would catch you.
You need a light, I'd find a match.
'cause I love the way you say good morning.
And you take me the way I am.
If you are chilly, here take my sweater.
Your head is aching, I'll make it better.
'cause I love the way you call me baby.
And you take me the way I am.
I'd buy you Rogaine if you start losing all your hair.
Sew on patches to all you tear.
'cause I love you more than I could ever promise.
And you take me the way I am.
You take me the way I am.
You take me the way I am.

I just wanted to say thank you for all of your prayers! Adam returned home safely this past Saturday evening. He did have his Dad take him to the Hospital late Saturday evening because he was not feeling well. He had something called "Acute Pharyngitis" but he is feeling much better now!
I finally was able to catch up with him at our friends home, Sven and Mary Thulin's, last night. He promises to catch up with us soon and let us know some of the highlights of his trip.
A few things he did mention last night were:
Haiti has a 4% employment rate. 80% of the people are under the poverty line. 55% make less then a dollar/ day. He went to a town called Petit Goave for 3 days. They had no bathrooms to use, but only the Caribbean Sea for these 200 people. Adam's team helped build a shelter out of tree branches and metal.
He was impressed with the local church they had in the center of the little town. He said "their faith is very strong and their worship is very intense." One of the most important things I heard him say was that "As poor as they were, they were very content considering their situation".
I guess, sometimes we just need to hear these things to remind ourselves of how blessed we really are.[...]
A small group in Santa Fe, New Mexico is claiming that the city is discriminating against them by having wireless networks in public buildings. How are these buildings discriminatory? Simple. These people are allergic to Wi-Fi.

cranky - I'm a sensitive / moody boy today -
slept a lot
watched finale of the office - nice closer.
played with newton and pye - frog on a string, mostly
I was more cranky - discovered that it's primarily due to fears about health - back issues and surgery, especially. BHK helps me figure out why.
showered
went to mexico for dinner
wal-mart for after - got a happy, friendly galactus & human torch,(on discount, no less) bhk got a bubble baton
also - green and yellow t-shirts, socks, animal crackers, kitty litter.
came home
relaxed and watched our last psych - first season long missing tim curry / american idol episode
watched the soup
watched fruit carving
went to bedski, not cranky now.

Power went out last night at about midnight or thereabouts... my CPAP shut down, so I had a lovely night of snoring over poor BHK's shoulder.
Showered and shaved in the rainy dawn-dark this morning - fortunately, I had a company polo shirt to wear, since the iron doesn't work sans juice, either.
I wonder how the Old Order Amish feel when they hear that the "English" (non-Amish) are fretting about not having any electricity?
Worse than the lack of power was the severe flooding and high winds.
... Flood Watch remains in effect until 2 PM EDT this afternoon...
* expect moderate to heavy rain to continue through the early
morning hours. Rain will taper off from the southwest to
northeast in the afternoon. An additional one to two inches of
rain is possible.
* The heavy rain will cause streams and creeks to overflow their
banks. Also... urban areas prone to poor drainage will be
susceptible to flooding. As the water works its way into the
rivers... river flooding will be possible in the upper Potomac
and Shenandoah basins.
Now - power is back on at the house, and no more flood warning for Calvert County.
After work, went to the back doctor - much more fruitful response this time. getting my epidural, physical therapy and etc... hopefully a bit more productive than "no hope blah blah" from last one. I get my epi in about a week, a flexion exercise program, ultrasound, electrical stim, and massage.
Saw Aardvark's Tara in her other work duds at Panera... she cleans up well! BHK and she gabbed a bit - the 2nd store is now closed primarily due to crooked employees making off with merch. Upside, that's more time for them to be social.. maybe we'll hang with them sometime soon! The Lusby store rocks the party that much more, too.
Ah, Virginia. You never let me down with the custom plates.
No relation to the flooding post, prior.
Two books for me to investigate library-wise. We saw 'em at the bookstore last week, and I think they'll be better as temporary reads rather than permanent additions to our collection. I may change my mind after reading 'em.

Back is feeling much better today. Not great, but only a low-level ache and tightness at the moment. The pills best used before bed as they make me sleepy and thus not suitable for work or any sharp thought-based activity during the day.
Still haven't heard from brother since he was released from jail. I imagine that no news is good news.... I think I'll call him tonight, though.
Yesterday afternoon while I was taking care of some issues, BHK ran to the nursery and picked up some veggies for us - Flowers : Ranunculus (look mostly like the Heart of Gold ), Some Red Cat Tails, a dozen ears of corn, and a big bag of zucchini. Local food for supper the next few days!
Also after work, BHK and I went to see The Forbidden Kingdom. I'd say that we both liked it - the settings and fight choreography were lovely, but I would really have loved to see what they'd have done in the 80's, when they were both at physical prime. It was also a bit too... American, I guess. The bookends of "bullies chase kid with no 'fu", to "kid, now trained, defeats bullies" weakened the picture a bit. Overall, I was more than pleased, but it wasn't as fantastic as I'd have hoped. Not in the same league as othe rcurrent wire fu flicks, but seeing Li and Chan together was pretty nifty... Plus, The Monkey King!
After the movie's popcorn, we were ready for some serious supper time, and headed to Red Robin... we were seated between an old man who had a fragrance of tomato soup in a baby diaper and an adorable down's syndrome baby.
That was ok, save for the distracting scent... but after waiting for about 10 minutes without seeing a server, I took it as a sign of possible things to come, and we left.
We made a beeline for Cheeburger2 and were seated immediately... placed our order, and chitty-chatted. The Trivial Pursuit cards at the table were ones we'd already done before, but that's the risk we take by going there so often. Our server was seemingly inexperienced at her job... a little while after we placed our order, she came back to tell us that they were all out of veggie burgers. Apparently, neither BHK or I were slotted for the meal we were looking for tonight. We got ready to go, and the girl pleaded with us to stay - free milkshakes were offered. (Reasonable, since they were already made, waiting for our non-present main course to come to us.) We said that it was ok, but she begged us to stick around while she got her boss to make things right. Bogdan was there, acting as manager... we really can't say no to him. He's been our burger buddy since I first moved here, and BHK has known him longer than that. He gave us some other options, which worked out fine. I got a grilled portobello sammich and BHK did a cow-burger, both had the same toppings and treatment we wanted on the veggie-burgers.
The shakes were tasty, though not as thick, since they had time to melt while we waited... I got a chocolate mint (not as good as chocolate cherry), and BHK had a standard ol' fashioned chocolate malt.
We made it home at about 9ish, BHK checked her email while I played a little TF2 (polishing my Heavy and Demoman skills) and Counterstrike.
Naughty Newt wouldn't let BHK's water alone... first he stuck his face close to it, and sneezed into the surface.... insuring that BHK wouldn't be drinking any. With that, he lapped the contents until he wasn't comfortable sticking his face inside the cup... so he put a paw in and pulled it over to drink from the puddle. BHK didn't know that he's fond of that little procedure. I guess she knows now. We went to bed shortly thereafter... reading turned swiftly to sleep.
Best thing about Gordon Ramsay is his insult factor. calling someone a doughnut, a pelican and a donkey.
I'm surely going to call someone a "silly pelican" sometime soon.
This morning, I remember a dream of disease outbreak - lots of panic - BHK and I were separated, don't know where the cats went.
I was put on a bus to Schenectady (why Schenectady?), with one small carry-on bag. I was forbidden to bring any money, books, cell phone / electronics or shoes, with the understanding that I'd be subject to robbery and worse if I did so. I don't remember what I did pack.. clothes and toiletries of some sort. I specifically recall bringing a roll of toilet paper and some pens and pencils. There was considerable fear and panic on the bus, but it wasn't overcrowded. I had my own seat, and behind me was the skinny guy from The Big Bang Theory.
The skinny guy and I talked for a bit... more like he spoke and I tossed in a comment here and there in support of what he was saying. I don't recall the exact nature of the conversation but there were certainly aspects of survival involved - something about safe water and how to make a solar oven was part of it. I was thirsty, and did not pack any water - there was a screeching or whooshing of air in my ears as we drove to our destination. Actor guy moved from the chair behind to sit next to me as there were two other fellows on his bench, pushing and shoving each other aggressively.
After our talk, skinny guy showed me that he was wearing an earring shaped like two horseshoes that were open, but closed enough that the second didn't fall from the first. the beads were black. He took it out and stuck it in my ear, piercing it when he did... and put in another one back in his own ear... the only difference was that his now had gray beads instead. He said that it was protection for the area ahead, and also gave me a compass and a powerful magnet (that didn't affect the compass, somehow) as a way to thank me because I wasn't annoying. The men behind us had been listening wanted thier own, but he refused. "Sorry - you were annoying me. Anyway, I don't have any more." and then was killed - I couldn't help him because I was back on the bus again, and he was in the parking lot, left far behind, shrieking as the two men tore him to pieces. I guess one of the men got the earring he had.
We stopped in Montana (must've been the long way, since we were going to NY from MD), where men in gas masks and carrying clipboards came on and took us outside one by one. We were lined up, and then everyone n the bus was killed except for me - deemed contagious, I suppose.
I was given food and water, and then told to walk from there. A broad expanse of grassy hills and green trees were ahead of me, with no path to be seen... but I walked, a deep sense of sadness hitting me with every step. I noted that the land was stunning, but empty without BHK and the boys with me... I began to wonder if I'd ever see them again- if somehow I'd been tricked and that this was a way of putting me in isolation.
I pulled a walking stick from a nearby branch and hit each tree, hoping to knock unseen fruit and to let nearby wildlife know I was coming... for whatever reason, I thought there were mountain lions in the woods.
Then I woke up to the alarm clock playing BHK's IPOD, and I was snuggled in with her, the boys on the bed as well. So that's a happy ending, anyhow.
