HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BHK!!

Allison's B'day! I buttered her nose while she was distracted by playing audiosurf. (Got it for $5 this last weekend.) I was a little disappointed that my mp3 of Christopher Walken reciting Poe's "The Raven" was so linear.

As a gift / party-favor to all for BHK's day - A GAZILLION Free to print and play games.

Oh BGG, how I thank the Internets you're there.

If you're not into free games, (or even if you are, dear journal) here's a stop-motion zombie movie called Chainsaw Maid. Best zombie film this year. (from the same people who did Bloody Date )

No Lebanese Taverna Tonight - Falafel time must wait - instead we hit Gallo's Deli - food is still pretty good. Not as superior as Selby, but only a block or two from the house. BHK opened the remainder for her loot tonight.

I got her an assortment of little trinket-treats - My faves were earring-studs in the style of mexican sugar skulls and a bottlecap pin with a pirate inside saying ARG in letter beads.... but I'm partial to things skully. I need to take a picture of BHK's loot pile - other items were a lovey charm, a ouija board pin, and a horde of coupons to do / get things, from getting me in a good mood to a movie night with no snarky comments. (2 nights, if neither are Jane Austen-related).

08/08/08 08:08:08... PM

Nice day at work today - we took a field trip to the Port of Baltimore and a CSX location.

Some piccies - click to embiggen, as always, dear journal.

Nifty container lifts, a burned out building that was used in Enemy of the State, and some giant bumpers.

Got home, and... had some dinner! BHK made an awesome dinner of pizza and salad yum-noms!

Additionally, the video card installed, quick as a wink, while the pizza was being put to the last heating phase.

The 8800 GT is at *least* 4x faster than my old ati x1600 , and I haven't had any of the hot pixel problems so far now. The old ati x1600 still plays games pretty well. Maybe I'll put it in my server just to have a backup game device.

"A lady noticed her computer was running slower after she had brought her computer in to be repaired. She took the computer to a second repair shop where they found that one of the problems was that her webcam would turn on whenever it detected her around and was taking photos and uploading it to a website. The repair technician that installed the software has done this to at least 10 women and has photos of at least one undressing."

8/1 - Lughnasadh, the holy day of Lludd, Samhain, next! My next birthday is 6 months from now - and the last is six months in the past, give or take a few hours.

Dagwood night with the in-laws and BHK! Tooth was bugging me a bit, so I didn't consume too much.

Watched more of Black Magic with Raymond burr and Orson Welles. Not a terribly excellent film. A lot of scenery chewing, and a good excues to cuddle on the couch.

Water on Mars: confirmed.

Laboratory tests aboard NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander have identified water in a soil sample. The lander's robotic arm delivered the sample Wednesday to an instrument that identifies vapors produced by the heating of samples.

The lander itself added, on Twitter, "FTW!" (I imagine and hope that's "for the win", not the other one... "f*** the world".)

"Technology Review has up an article about Shapeways, a new online rapid-prototyping service that allows users to upload digital designs which are then printed on 3-D printers and shipped back. A spinoff from Philips Research, the service gives small businesses, designers, artists, and hobbyists access to prototyping tools that were once available only to the largest corporations. The fee for a typical printed object is $50-$150. Their video shows the steps behind the process."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rq2_YKQGE_U Since we saw the fireworks on the bay yesterday (fireworks at beaches are staggered - different cities do them on different days so you can attend them all week and weekend long), we did our own today. Matt and Tina came back over, as did Chris and Larry.

Matt helped me quite a bit with the grill and lighting of the pyrotechnics. We ate leftovers from the 3rd, still plenty of burgers, corn, and mac&cheese for the eating!

If being captured and tortured makes you ready to be president, there's a whole Guantanamo full of candidates the Republicans haven't even considered.

I'm actually a bit fearful of McCain winning. I shouldn't be, but I was burned by Kerry and Gore, both of which I'd have thought had it in the bag.

Dave's trying to put me at ease - I hope he's right. (Though I am annoyed about Obama's recent campaign actions, too - the aforementioned Supreme Court tossing the D.C. gun ban / Obama’s faith based initiatives / pandering like flags on lapels and "values" as part of a campaign ads.)

Ray Harryhausen turned 88 a couple of days ago - I thought he had passed on. I'm glad I was wrong.

Looks like our condo issues are about up, now. The new management company has contacted us, our bill to be paid actually has an itemized list we can agree with, and it should be smoother sailing as far as that building is concerned.

I'm often surprised when I meet people who are... well, to put it in gaming terms, "built on a lot more or a good deal fewer points" than me. I keep myself in the thought of "everyone is created equal", but it's really just not true. I've met a couple of people that are practically super-heroes, and pulp-style doc savage types, at that. (I worked with his opposite number at the library, years ago, too) Here and there I come across a person who is amazingly put together - talented, good-natured, physically, socially and mentally fit. Granted, it's not often that this happens - I figure most people have at least one or two attributes that are at least along the mean, if not sub-par. Then there's the other side of things... someone who is neither kind to the eyes, particularly intelligent, healthy or easy to get along with. How did they get such a short end of the stick?

I know it's a pipe dream, but shouldn't everyone be beautiful and ugly somewhere obvious after talking to them for a moment or thirty? When I get blindsided by folks falling on one side of the bell curve or the other, I have this need to find something contrary to the rest of the model... and I get a little distressed if I can't spot the hidden flaw or silver lining of the cloud. I know it won't always be obvious, like Hawking's mind trapped in his body (or Anna Nicole Smith's Body [at prime] trapped containing its brain.) Those two aren't the best examples as I've never met either before, but I suspect that they're fair ones.

I think that the first thing most gamers do when given a system of measuring certain skills and abilities is to build themselves, just to see where they stand. (or, if you're extra goofy like I am, you'll do your whole game group, and then compare notes.)

Last night, while watching Astronaut Farmer - Chris asked if the main character was going to die. My answer of "yes, eventually" was not well received.

Ten original designs have been submitted in the 8th Icehouse Game Design Competition, and anyone willing to rank at least two of the ten designs is welcome to serve as a judge. The deadline for judging is July 18th. For details on judging, as well as links to all of the designs, head to the Icehouse Game Design page. (I don't have any entries this time, but Logger looks fun, at least in theory, as does Ambush.)

I most certainly prefer German-type boardgames (somewhat abstract, largely non-confrontational, and relatively short in playing time), rather than American-style (games that are heavy in theme, aggressive, and requiring an entire evening to play.)

That said, I think we're going to slow down on our game purchases now - our closet is pretty full. I'd like to trot out a few games for the 3-4th of July time off, especially since we'll have Alan, Jesus, The Mama, Chris, Larry, BHK and me available to play, plus the possibility of Tina and Matt. I suspect it'll turn into Apples to Apples fest, but I'd like a few other 3+ player games to get a workout then too... maybe Witch Trial or Super Munchkin would be fun and easy enough for a bigger crew... I'd even like to see a mob-sized Carcassone H&G game.

Other Possibilities are Clue, Aquarius, and Fluxx (Zombie, eco, family or regular... or a mix!)

I doubt we could get 'em to do Chrononauts. That'll be for when Amy comes over. BHK and I love it, but the gang might not be into the learning part. (same for Crime Lords or Arkham Horror )

We could play Werewolf if we get at least 8 people that want to play. It'd be better with 13... I wonder where Adam, Eric, Jimmy and Joe will be this weekend?)

Speaking of Gaming -
Game Table Online is moving from subscription-based play to free, open gaming for all users as of July 1. (Lord of The Fries ! Kill Dr. Lucky !

It's officially a change of seasons, no matter where you live, now. Summer, here. Spring seemed to be far more brief than Winter. Happy Longest day of the year, Northern Hemisphere!

Could someone explain to me how Obama not taking public campaign funds "ruins his credibility"?

Let's see--- today -

Shots! Quick and Easy.

Didn't get to Aardvark for replacement for Catan Dice, and pick up Illuminati: Crime Lords - probably tomorrow.

Went to Annapolis to go see Zohan - I didn't realize he was going to be some sort of superhero - more fun than I'd thought- had the requisite Sandler dumbness, but it was pretty cute. A few running gags ran overlong, but it was better than I'd expected. The beginning sort of put me in the mood to see Hancock.

I'm rather saddened to hear that Get Smart is poorly rated (almost as bad as the love guru? Seriously? That bad? I haven't seen, but can only assume the words fro Guru.) - I hope that Wall-E and Hancock bring something more fun to this summer's movies. I haven't seen Indy 4 yet either, but I hope it's better than the reviews make it out to be.

Pizza at the New Pizza Hut by ATW man - not the best - I think it made BHK sick.

Picked up the mail, and noticed our screener of Swarm of the Snakehead came in! (official site)

BHK and I went down for a nap, she is sleeping heavily. (Still wasn't feeling well) - I got up after an hour, and did some work on the computer for about an hour, and then played video games for about 3 hours - (Portal, HL2, and some game mods - Pirates, Vikings and Knights II and Zombie Panic.) Tossed a little Bioshock in for good measure.

Happy Father's Day! Beware the Ides of June!

Had a lovely breakfast at the in-laws. Got Larry a pair of nice cards, and a Micheal Buble' album. He seemed to dig 'em!

Lar made pancakes on the grill's skillet - they were fantastic... and the weather in the morning wasn't super hot... quite nice, actually. We sat on the deck and watched the birds of prey go fishing in the bay - one took off with a giant meal afte ronly a quick glance and dive. Post breakfast, we went into the house and listened to his new CD - it was OK - but I had been feeling rather ragged and zonked out on the recliner until BHK noted we had to go and grab groceries for the cookout later on.

I slept in the car as BHK shopped - we had to turn around at one point, as we'd thought that Adam and Joey weren't coming - we had to grab more dogs, buns, chips and soda-pop to keep the teens fed and happy.

I napped more at home, while BHK made Larry a blueberry/blackberry pie (and one for us at the house, too!)

Everyone showed up at about 7, I grilled meat for the team, Chris brought baked beans and slaw, BHK set everything up, and we ate like we'd just gotten the first meal in days. The folding chairs are going to get a lot of use this summer, I think.

It went well, and as the sun went down, the gang headed out and the sights and sounds of the evening began to rise up... frogs ribbiting, mosquitoes buzzing and nibbling, and fireflies lighting up the garden like dozens of will-o-wisps. we went inside, as the frogs were too busy singing to eat up all of the mosquitoes - the biters didn't stop other folks outside from lighting off roman candles and other fireworks. Maybe the smoke acts as a repellent?

Tonight, someone was shooting off fireworks, and some got caught on newtcam. In North Beach, any holiday is a good excuse for pyrotechnics.

Arbor day? Sure! National Pen-pal day? Heck, Why not?

I am feeling better a bit now that the day is about done - I think the nap may've stiffened my back more than help. Next time, perhaps just a sitting rather than a flat-out snooze will be best. I didn't dwell much on my own father today...just as well, really.

.hot.0524081304.jpg.

pictures - ATW man salutes our fallen heroes, and I complain about the heat. (Not nearly as hot as it was in other locales, so I hear!)

Slept well on the new bed - I wasn't feeling so hot earlier, but a nap helped my back and headache quite a bit. Still a little nauseated, but not too terrible.

We had the in-laws over again and made more franks and beans for dinner, and this time, the bonfire and s'mores were a reality. Added bonus was blowing bubbles.

Opted out of the new town trolley to Pete Green's - The route is cute, and could be a lot of fun - two bits to ride can't be beat. I wouldn't mind just taking it for a little day-tour out and about where BHK and I can relax and take in the scenery. I suspect that the trolley's primary use will be for drinkers getting home safe... I'm all for it if it keeps the drunkies from behind the wheel.

I want to pick up a bike - the in-laws cycled up the beach for breakfast this morning, and I thought it sounded like a fun way to ge tout of the house for a bit.

I still haven't decided what new e-books to put on the PDA - maybe I'll take a breather and stick to pulp-books for a bit.

0525081242.jpgLarry and I picked up the bed this morning - BHK and I napped a bit today. Feels good so far, but it is surprisingly high - maybe 6 (likely more) inches taller than the old one.

Picture, left - Larry, scrunched down a bit to magnify the "princess and the pea effect".

Post-nap, the gang did lots of yardwork - my blueberry plant is in the ground now, as are BHK's roses... and Chris's tomato plants.

Closed out the day grilling hot dogs for the family - in-laws brought beans, cole slaw and buns... nice Sunny day today. We passed on the bonfire and s'mores - we were too full of dinner to move.

Instead, we watched some recorded top gear and hung out for a bit... bedtime again soon.

Current read - Gateway by Fred Pohl. Not bad thus far - got it free from the library bookmobile about a year ago... grabbed at random from queue when I realized that I'v epolished off all the ebooks on my PDA - will reload soon, but holding an actual tree-made book is nice. Long weekend is almost upon us. I think we'll be staying close to home and walking a bit in the nice weather that's expected.

Not much to say today - off to work in a few - but have a few links from here or there.

I forget if I linked to this recently or not - It bears repeating-

Austrian court agrees to hear arguments that a chimpanzee should be considered a legal person.

Best Bumper sticker seen recently - "I Bet Jesus Would Use His Turn Signal"

Am I too young to be nostalgic for Johnny Carson? I think not. I can't believe it's been 16 years since he retired.

My favorite swami Carson bit was the gag where gave the answer to questions sealed in envelopes.

The Answer : "A dog with wings"

The Question "Who Is Linda McCartney?"

I have no good reason to want a curta calculator, other than it's cool. Curse you for putting the idea in my head, jwz, but thanks for the link to the flash curta emulator!

Happy Mother's Day to all mothers out there!

We took Chris out to breakfast at Whitman's (South County Cafe), and then wandered about the area - scoped out a local hardware store, and then hit the major garden supply place to load up on botanical-type loot. My take of the haul is a big blueberry bush, completely pre-loaded with full berries... they'll be blue in another 60 days or so. A peanut plant, just because. BHK got Okra, patchouli, lemon eucalyptus, creeping jenny, and... some other goodies that don't come immediately to mind.

It's raining like gangbusters now... setting my alarm via the cell phone, because I have my doubts that the evening will go by without a power loss.

Set up Pyecam to go along with Newtcam. About time he got equal treatment video-wise. Pyecam won't be 24/7 though, until we work out a pye-intensive, but safe place to put the laptop unattended for long periods.

wampa say wha?
BHK made a fantastic and healthy supper of bean/spinach salad and spicy stir-fry tofu "beef" and broccoli. Delicious and nicely filling.

Chris and Larry are heading out of town this weekend... and they're taking Tigger with 'em. No real Mother's Day things happening this weekend after all - maybe a nice day of painting some pottery, instead?

The latest and greatest version of VZ Navigator (4.0), which tosses in traffic avoidance for 75 cities, along with 3D view plus some other nifty stuff is live right now. (Includes Baltimore and Washington dc!)

I'm looking forward to seeing how solid it is!

I'm still on the phrase "STEAMED CATFISH IN BANANA LEAVES!"

Sorry.

Not Sorry.

Speaking of same... I forget if I've mentioned it or not, but save for a little too much fanboy junk, I pretty much dig the Dresden files books... but I can't seem to get into Jim Butcher's Codex Alera "Horse and Swords" fantasy stuff.

Got my shots early - we had time to visit an awesome church yard sale / flea market. I got a webcam for $5 (retails for $40, minimum) - Coming soon now there'll be a Pyecam featuring Newt as well as a Newtcam Featuring Pye!

Additionally, BHK got some cute crafty hair-clips, I got my grubby mitts on assorted baked goods. (A cupcake, a brownie and half of a chocolate nut cookie)

Additionally, we obtained a few boardgames and a card game - all in well-loved boxes, medieval or ancient Greece themes, and with all the pieces. Reviews to follow.

After the sale, we hit Free Comic Book Day. Did we get lots of loot there? Why, yes, dear journal! The only thing we didn't get was the Gumby comic... I eased that wound with a new game - Oshi. We also got a pair of Iron Man movie heroclix and two bounty hunters from the star wars miniatures game. We beat the Aardvark staff to the store by about 10 minutes. (They open at noon.)

That reminds me, I need to send a Larry the zombie to Kat and GP.

After Aardvark - we hit Maerten's to pick up BHK's silver bean necklace and box chain; then off to Cheeseburger in Paradise to play hangman and have some lunchies.

It didn't agree much with BHK and my guts... maybe a bit more greasy than we're used to.

More new arrivals at drop.io/scottobear. Thanks!

I could go for some banana bread, or a blueberry muffin.

Hey! It's World Naked Gardening Day!(nsfw) (via flying-blind, via an unknown quantity.)

I won't be participating - I'm sure my neighbors would thank me.
