Another *busybusy* day at work, but eased when I got home - BHK made supper of the remainder of the sloppy joe mix became taco salad fodder, with a side of veggie taquitos. Good stuff... BHK and I watched the Vampire Ventriloquist's Dummy episode of Middleman - the show continues to shine. Venture brother's first half was pretty spiffy, too.

Other things that brought cheer - seeing these kitty pictures in the archive... both were taken at the same time - both kitties sucking up as much sunlight as they could hold. Newt was totally whited out, and pye looks very comfy on the purple couch.

The nice folks at NPR have done us all a favor and taken some used Kinoki foot pads to be tested to see if they'd drawn anything out of a guinea pig reporter's body. Guess what? They didn't.

Reporter Sarah Varney bought some Kinoki foot pads and wore them to bed. She also subjected her husband to the (alleged) detox treatment. In the morning, they both awoke to the stinky brown mess that the advertisement had promised. Not convinced that the brown stuff had actually come from their bodies, our hero took the foot pads to a lab and had them analyzed and compared with unused pads.

"Compared to the blank that's almost identical," said the scientists. "It looks like three of the same sample, basically."

A doctor from UC Berkeley confirms the scam diagnoses. Your body already eliminates "metabolic waste" and "toxins" through, um, other means...

"For many hundreds of thousands of years we've been successfully eliminating them through the usual means, which is urine and feces, and there has been no demonstrated need to accelerate that."

So what is all that gunk in the pad? We're not really sure, but it shows up if you hold the pad over a pot of boiling water. Who knew distilled water had "metabolic waste"?

I neglected to mention that the love cube (our Honda element) is now repaired... they replaced the whole hood - BHK think that it may be from a different model, and she might be right. I haven't seen any good photos of 2006 vs other element hoods online yet, but we'll get to the bottom of it, if it requires us to go to a car lot somewhere and look in person.

Last night at about 5:30ish, there was a storm that knocked out power to both Chesapeake Beach and North Beach... not to mention the surrounding towns, too. No juice means no oven, and since I was still dressed from work, I figured it'd be nice to take BHK out to dinner, seeing as she's been craving meatballs all day. We tried Ledos, Asia Cafe and Mama Lucia's north to no avail.. apparently everyone else had the same idea about eating out... even mexico was too mobbed, so we continued onwards to Mama Lucia's south - The service was a bit on the weak side until BHK politely asked the waitress (while I was washing my hands in the men's room) . Service improved after that.... we got home and both towns were still dark, save for places with generators.

I used the flashlight on my key chain to get us inside, and we lit a few rechargeable candle-style lamps for some ambient light. We have access to a lot of battery-powered light - cell phones, pda, laptops, flashlights... I think we could go days without running totally out of lamp-juice. That said - I want to recharge the candle-lights, since we hadn't done them fully beforehand. The emergency flashlight and radio lit up the bathroom area nicely as a night lite - we opened the bedroom windows and went to bed, hoping that the heat wouldn't be too bad... it wasn't... but poor BHK didn't sleep very well... I was snoring big time, as the CPAP runs on juice, too. Next time, I'll bring the UPS from the computer room in to run it.

So, power was restored at about 2am this morning, and we were all able to get an hour or two's rest before it was time for me to get up and get rolling to work. I hope to catch a little nap sometime tomorrow in order to try and catch up.

Maryland Renaissance Fest is coming up. I figure we'll go again, probably for one weekend, this time to just people watch, if nothing else. Scottish Weekend might be fun.

Got a postcard from the bro. He sounds better when he's sobered up. I'll be writing him sometime between tomorrow night and this weekend. It breaks my heart every time I think of him... I thought I was mostly over it, but I'm really still fairly tender about it at times. If luck enters the picture, maybe he'll get some good, solid treatment, but I won't get my hopes up.

His arraignment was supposed to have been on Monday - I wonder how long before public records will give me follow-up info? He's got a calendar call on 9/2/08 - I guess I'll know more then.

I am so thankful that today is Friday... I'm ready for a weekend. Lots of hustling around, getting ducks in a row, lately at work.

Dagwood night! BHK sneakily added Bethesda, MD -centric Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants to Netflix, and I suspect that'll be what we watch, rather than Machine Girl, given that the in-laws are coming over... It also seems that she bumped up Introducing the Dwights, which I'm actually fairly interested in seeing.

The longer I wait to see Indiana Jones 4, the less I even want to see it. My mind will likely be changed once it gets viewed.

Sandwich for me - Veggie Sub -fried eggplant and provolone, on fresh Italian bread. Yum.

Pye still seems to prefer to appear on Newtcam... and Newt lingers a lot in Pyecam's window. Go figure.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ADAM!!

0720081450.jpg

BHK managed to grease Adam's nose, with a minimum of struggle. total surprise. We watched The Seeker: The Dark is Rising -(not bad, but seemed more than a little "Mary Sue"-ish, even for a fantasy movie. Christopher Eccleston was totally misused in the film. I know he can act, I've seen it.) and re-watched National Treasure 2. (BHK and Adam really like the sequel... while I like the first, the second fell a bit flat for me.... I am looking forward to the next one.)

Chips and dip, Hot dogs and corn on the cob for all, with a confetti-birthday cake, yellow cake with whipped white icing and sprinkles. It was devoured before a photograph could be recorded. I fear we may soon grow weary of hot dogs, but I'm doing OK so far. In-laws left at about 6, and Adam at 7. We hit the sack pretty early again tonight.. need to recharge the batteries for tomorrow.

We gave Adam coupons for his birthday, as we couldn't find anything his size that was something special.

Coupons included:

  • 1 use - Get out of being nagged by BHK Free. (He almost had to use it re: cigar smoking on special occasions.)
  • Hug from Pyewacket (renewable)
  • Headbutt from Newt (renewable)
  • 1 full tank of gas (please to use before it gets higher than $10 a gallon, and no more than 18 gallons - (his car holds 12))
  • Girl advice from either a girl (BHK) or a Boy (me) or both - he is not obligated to take said advice.
  • free trip to the drive in
  • free pizza night!
  • emergency help, anytime he needs it.

We still haven't dug into Canasta Caliente or Rook yet. I suspect next weekend will be good for that. Maybe Chinese Checkers, depending, too. (Perhaps just 2-player Halma.)

BHK made dinner tonight of veggie brats with onion and green pepper (on a baguette from the farmer's market) , along with sides of Mexican-style corn on the cob. Good stuff!

Pye on "Monitor Duty" this morning. He looks like he just woke up, but he's been flipping around for at least an hour.

I can't believe my Dad would've been 62 this year. I can't even imagine how he might've aged.

Just checked on my Brother's record online, and it says he's in 12MM (Male Infirmary). I wonder what happened to him? He's now in the North Broward Bureau, which is already a bad sign.

From the site -

The North Broward Bureau is a minimum to medium security, special needs detention facility housing male and female offenders. The facility also houses protective custody female offenders and female juveniles. The facility currently holds 1,200 inmates.

The primary mission of the facility is to house and manage the mentally ill, medically infirm and special needs inmate population.

Momster pulled his police report - It seems he'd parked in a handicapped space, and when the police ran his tags, the car he was in was reported stolen. Apparently his license was expired, as well. It was certainly enough to violate probation.

[Edit - in 11c now, out of the infirmary. Bro has been there before. My guess is he is detoxing or being treated for bi-polar as he has claimed that in the past.]

Watched the last episodes of New Amsterdam - I can almost see where they got the cancellation notice, and decided to stop effort in the writing. and Burn NoticePsych are both coming back in the summer (this week and next, I think), so I figure that Amsterdam would've fallen out of rotation, anyhow.

Caught another 10-20 of Duck, you Sucker (Or A Fist Full of Dynamite), (158 minutes!) - I don't know if I could sit through it all in one sitting. I like spaghetti westerns, but this one is best taken in smaller doses.

New desk in the office - BHK and I went through more sweat than we needed to put it in and install it - my fault on that. But, we've got it in and it looks to be a good, sturdy bit of furniture. Slightly different angle on Newtcam now, but I'll work out the particulars of that later on. Seems like the cam suffered a little bit in transition - I can't get auto-tilt to work now, nor does the mic want to pick up. I still need to reactivate Pyecam - it's been sleeping for the last week or so.

Pinched my back and had a monster headache, so I slept a bit, and read some of the Planet Hulk hardcover I got from the library. I'm blessed by the fact that there's a comic book guy working at our local branch, and he hooks me up with just about anything I might like. He's been on the money more often than not, thus far!

The holiday was 4 days long, but it went by swiftly. Lots of junk food and time consumed at a mammoth rate. I'm going to hav eot be a bit better about that sort of thing in the future... first things first, clean up the office desk and then a MWF walking schedule.

Back to work - but it's a short week this go 'round.

Newtcam and Pyecam may be a bit messy for the next couple of days as the house gets put back in order. Or maybe not... the images are a bit outside the primary shuffle-zones.

Hits on the side links for both have been down lately - I wonder why? They've been mighty cute recently and viewings is still pretty high, but nobody wants to go through the ads. I can understand that. I'm just surprised that there aren't more things interesting to folks on the sidebar. I should probably add more text at the bottom to mix the feed up a bit.

In-laws came over for pizza and the 2nd half of astronaut farmer - movie didn't do much for me, but I didn't totally hate it either. BHK was about the same, I think.

I keep thinking of Winston Churchill's quotation, made in a radio broadcast in October 1939:

"I cannot forecast to you the action of Russia. It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma; but perhaps there is a key. That key is Russian national interest."

Just the "a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma" part.

Nutmeg J Salmonella - the little box turtle that lives in our back yard, near the vegetable garden. Nutmeg - named for a turtle I had as a Kid in Delray Beach (named nutmeg, because that was the name on the pen we had for him to live in - prior resident was a brown rabbit of the same name.) Salmonella - well, because he's a turtle nothing personal, I assure you, dear journal. I love his shell-patterns.. remind me of raccoon footprints. J, because it's standard procedure to give J as the middle initial, isn't it?

We also have a multitude of tadpoles living right next to our bedside window - there's a drainage ditch filled with water that gets just the right amount of sun. I hope all the little froggies are viable, and take care of the mosquitoes that have been appearing since summer hit. They can leave the lightning bugs alone if possible, too.

That Meme -

Post 3 things you've done in your lifetime that you don't think anybody else on your friends list has done. See if anybody else responds with "I've done that." If they have, you need to add another. Have your friends cut & paste this into their journal to see what unique things they've done in their life.

1.  met my wife as a result of livejournal. (and honeymooned by visiting a whole mess of the ripley's believe it or not museums up and down the east coast - from St. Augustine, FL  to Myrtle Beach, SC)

1. became a vegetarian on the 5th of july, 1990. (still do dairy and eggs - now crustaceans, too. )

2. discovered (after we broke up) that one of my ex-girlfriends was married and had kids the entire time we were romantically entangled.

3.adopted 2 cats, despite a strong allergy to them. (Fortunately, I'm used to Newt and Pye now!)
3. Helped recover hundreds of missing kids and elderly/confused adults (most just wander-offs, but at least six real kidnappings) over the course of three and some years.

Students studying computing in the UK and US are outsourcing their university coursework to graduates in India and Romania. Work is being contracted out for as little as £5 on contract coding websites usually used by businesses. Students are outsourcing everything from simple coursework to full blown final year dissertations. It's causing a major headache for lecturers who say it is almost impossible to detect.

The irony of course is that if they actually get jobs in the sector, this will be how they actually work anyway.

Another Mummy movie coming out, in two months? I didn't even know it was being filmed! Looks like no Rachel Weisz though. That's not really a big loss - I liked her in the first film, but she sort of bleemed out on the sequel for me.

That, and I didn't hear about the new Blood Bowl game. I'm really out of the entertainment loop lately! At least I can have a good violent Dwarfs vs Lizardmen football combat game before end of year.

Bill Clinton has offered his support to Barack Obama. When asked about his attacks on Obama during the primaries, Clinton remarked, “It depends on what your definition of ‘hollow, fork-tongued, naïve, flip-flopping little diaper baby’ is.”

Just a note to mention how much I love BHK. beyond quantification. Lots. and Lots. She's the most amazing person I've ever had the pleasure to know.

Misc doodles done recently on the palm - the medical stats are from my last epidural, both before and after. The fish or carrot eating firebutt and frank oz (with hair) guy are from the avectra meeting break. I was surprised, because I was the only one there wearing a tie... Frank Oz guy was hypnotic in his tone of voice.

Other stuff is from the bus ride - still congested, doc's appt, and a random blue ghost with newtcam. the little gray slug is something pye was chasing that night.

Watched the quiz boy episode of Venture brothers last night... mostly character filler and "spot the reference". This season hasn't been as good as last, so far - I hope it catches speed soon. Speaking of TV - I haven't viewed middleman yet, but I keep hearing good things. It should be on our tivo - need to check and see if it was snagged.

I've been at my gig for a year today - hard to believe. In some ways it seems like I've been there a lot longer... in others, only a few months.

Looks like DV has moved on from my old gig as head of MIS at ACIM ... and Tiff is gone, too. They just can't hang on to folks there. I noticed that Obama earmarked $300k from his state to support the ACIM service - I wonder how much of that actually went to help Illinois?

Nice light dinner of sammiches over some silly reality TV. BHK was disappointed when the guy on Farmer takes a wife snuffed out the one she (and I) thought would take it. I still think the whole thing is more scripted than ugly betty, but I'm a reality show cynic.

a year ago, they'd never have slept this close together.

Being woken in the dead of night by noisy neighbors blasting out music could soon be a thing of the past. Scientists have shown off the blueprint for an “acoustic cloak”, which could make objects impervious to sound waves.

Happy Birthday to Ldy, my littler big sis! she's ...what, 5 again this year?

I *still* have "froggy went a-coutrin', he did ride" in my head.

I must've done something dreadfully bad to deserve this. Great... now I have pet shop boys in my head.

"What have I done? What have I done? What have I done to deserve this
