Thank you, Thank you to everyone in the military, past and present devoted to protecting us.

In honor of Veterans day, I post a picture of me as G.I Joe, fighting an evil yeti.

It isn't all commies, nazis and terrorists, you know!

Disclaimer, that isn't really me... I was just told that it looked like me, by David. I hope he was referring to the Joe, not the Yeti. :)

Today we'll be celebrating Adam's 20th birthday a day early.

I was born on the day of a full moon, 40 years, 5 months, 15 days ago, about an hour after sunrise on the 33rd day of 1969. Candlemas, Groundhog Day, National Change your Windshiel Wipers Day. (I really dig wolframalpha)

We've got to butter his nose today, and get him some razzles. Grill up some hot dogs, give him a cake to munch - maybe some ice cream.

It's cloudy, but hot as heck.. thankfully it rained to cool tihngs off during Adam's party.

We left so BHK could finish her studies - just as well, my back is really crimped today.

Book fair in Annapolis - taking it slow and easy though. Yard sale, and sat in on a panel of writers. Saw the Wayne Alan - writer of Magical Meatless Meals. More in-depth reviews to follow.

Scholastic was there - lots of flashbacks to the days when filling out a little strip of paper and ordering books through school came back.

Book fair was at the Keys school private education pre-k - 12- the mascot is the obezegs (Gazebo backwards)

Also shown - Easter egg tree, gazebo roof, and some video of the local color.

Got my allergy shots today, and Dr. Moody was in - fortunately for me, as I was really pretty sore and my epidural isn't for 2 weeks yet. She gave me a scrip for prednisone, some knockout drops for nighttime, and a nice dose of muscle relaxer for when I need to function at work.

While BHK was getting the scrip filled, I visited the radio shack next door for a power cord to juice my $1 police scanner - no dice, but I did get a tv tuner for the pc - much fun, but need to get a better antenna for more signal. (right now I get one analog pbs channel (poorly), and 3 digital channels.)

Picked up our mail, and then ducked in out of the rain at the candy store (I had to help E. Bunny with BHK's basket) - we discover grape-flavored wax mustaches... bhk augmented hers with a candy cigarette. far superior to cherry wax lips of my youth.

0411091519.jpg. 0411091510.jpg

After that, I was pretty tuckered out, spent the rest of the day taking it easy - back was really out of whack.

What was your favorite movie when you were a kid? Is it still your favorite now that you're older?

View 501 Answers

I really liked Disney movies as a kid - I didn't get to watch many over and over, though - I would guess that the stuff that came on the Wonderful World of Disney werethose that got the most replay value.

Of that lot, I'd have to go with Donald in Mathemagic land, though it's not really a movie.. Maybe Blackbeard's Ghost  or possibly the Scarecrow.
Neither are really my favorite now, but I still hold them in a place of nostalgia.

meme-time - snagged from Sean

Think of 15 albums that had such a profound effect on you they changed your life or the way you looked at it. They sucked you in and took you over for days, weeks, months, years. These are the albums that you can use to identify time, places, people, emotions. These are the albums that no matter what they were thought of musically shaped your world. When you finish, tag 15 others, including me. Make sure you copy and paste this part so they know the drill. Get the idea now? Good. Tag, you're it!

Here is my list, narrowed to 15.
(Scotto isn't tagging anyone, but is happy to see any other entries)

Let's see... this could be fairly tricky - I'm not sure of music that changed me forever... I've never really been one of those folks to play the same album over and over again... a few that come to mind -

Stuff that was significant to me, and I still dig -

1. Beach boys - I went through a major Beach Boys phase as a kid - Pet Sounds was something that got a lot of play both in my home and on my walkman. The album still cheers me up quite a lot.

2. Beatles - Yellow Submarine / Octopus's Garden (not really an album, but the first music I had as a kid.. that I remember. It wasn't even the Beatles, it was the Sesame Street Version) If I had to pick an actual Beatles  album, I really liked Rubber Soul.

3. Talking Heads - Little Creatures Great album - started me on that Band, and despite the "art student snob" aspect, I really like 'em.

4. Tubes - Outside Inside Got this form a yard sale - I was very pleasantly surprised. (Wild Women of Wongo is what got me to drop 25¢ for it. ) I figure I've gotten well worth my penny a play just for that track.

5. ELO - Time - first Album bought with my own money, played a *lot*

6. Steve Martin - A Wild And Crazy Guy Not really a music album, though it had banjo and The KingTut single.

7. B-52s - Whammy Discovered them late - mostly via gaming with Ray & Kat. (Specifically for Trism)

8. Zombies - Odessey and Oracle This one keeps coming back, and I love it every time. (Most recently for "This will be our year")

9. XTC - Oranges and Lemons  So Sue me... I like Mayor of Simpleton.

10. They Might Be Giants - Lincoln I first heard them on Dr. Demento when I was in High School - I've been hooked since. Hard to believe it's been 20 years+

11. Genesis - Selling England by the Pound Very different stuff than the Phil Collins-centric bits in later years. It may be my all-time fave Genesis Album.

12. Chuck Mangione - Chase the Clouds Away - One of the five 8-track tapes I had for my first car, the blue bomber. played repeatedly, because we only had 5 albums, and eventually the AC/DC and Beach Boys tapes wore out.

13. Rusted root - When I Woke - first really fun time with the hippies - post concert. I like them quite a lot.

14. Poi Dog Pondering - Poi Dog Pondering - "and I said YEAH!" - discovered by accident. Thanks, tape-traders in college!

15. Queen - Flash Gordon Soundtrack - FLASH ! AHAHHHHH! HE'LL SAVE EVERY ONE OF US!

I played a little bit of Fallout 3 this afternoon while waiting for the in-laws to show up for supper - pigs in blankets!

Once they got here, I got a telephone call from my mom - just gabbed a bit, but when I came back out, the in-laws were ready to take off. I guess they weren't too into The Fall.   BHK and I liked it - I really enjoyed just staring through it - nifty costumes and sets.

Photos from this evening. Featuring snow that looks like ping pong balls in the light of a flash, blue lit room due to pausing the tv, and a phantom kiss from BHK due to a long shutter opening. Also seen is the "Rosy Glow" due to light diffraction outside.

Oh, at last. Updated the EEE with a book reader, an art program and new drivers, not to mention useful utilities for work, like openoffice and adobe. - should be a really solid palmtop replacement, and then some. Big thing will be doodling - we'll see how that works with the trackpad, or a little external mouse.

There was a fire 2 doors down tonight - It seems that someone didn't clean thier chimney, and it caught fire. (If feel guilty a bit for thinking DRYER FIRE at first.) Nobody was hurt, but there was a lot of smoke.

Random pictures from tonight. BHK, Pye watching the firetruck, my upper desk, and our windows need to be cleaned after all the kitty nose touches and snow time. Clicking should embiggen and open in a new window.

Phil's official forecast as read February 2nd, 2009 at sunrise at Gobbler's Knob:

Hear Ye Hear Ye

On Gobbler's Knob this glorious Groundhog Day, February 2nd, 2009

Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Prognosticator of all Prognosticators

Awoke to the call of President Bill Cooper

And greeted his handlers, Ben Hughes and John Griffiths

After casting a joyful eye towards thousands of his faithful followers,

Phil proclaimed that his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers were World Champions one more time

And a bright sky above me

Showed my shadow beside me.

So 6 more weeks of winter it will be.

Also, Happy 40th Birthday to me!
