A picture taken on May 3, 2014, (released June 12), shows people visiting “The Gateway to Hell,” a huge burning gas crater in the heart of Turkmenistan’s Karakum desert. The fiery pit was the result of a simple miscalculation by Soviet scientists in 1971 after their boring equipment suddenly drilled through into an underground cavern and a deep sinkhole formed. Fearing that the crater would emit poisonous gases, the scientists took the decision to set it alight, thinking that the gas would burn out quickly and this would cause the flames to go out. But the flames have not gone out in more than 40 years.

Misc questions about me meme

Do you sleep with your closet doors open or closed? Closed. Open will get kitties wandering in and maybe shredding dry cleaning.

Do you take the shampoos and conditioner bottles from hotel? Sure. Why wouldn’t I?

Have you ever stolen a street sign before? Yup. I was a pup at 16-17. Used as part of SCA practice armor. Part of Bob’s barricade flasher.

Do you always smile for pictures? No, I sometimes make monkey face or the like.

Do you ever count your steps when you walk? I use a pedometer, but seldom count manually above a few dozen.

What is your Song of the week? Probably something from the live TMBG album. She’s An Angel is a good one. Just got it as a freebie recently.

What do you drink with dinner? Water, seltzer, soda pop, or the like.

What is your favorite food? Hmm. Possibly something Mexican, Chinese or Indian. Really depends on mood. Right now, I could really just go for a conch fritter from the Delray affair if I was in southern Florida circa 1985. Darn it, time and space!

Which movie could you watch over and over and still love? There are a few. Tremors, City of lost children, time bandits, planet of the apes ( rod serling version)

Last person you kissed/kissed you? I kissed Allison, natch. I was just head-butted by Newton, too.

Were you ever a boy/girl scout? Yup, made it to first class, but not eagle.

Can you cry on command? Nope. I could in time if I work on it, I imagine.

Are you loyal? I am. Loyalty is a broad spectrum though. To my wife, surely. To my favorite sports team or whatever, not so much.

When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone on paper? Love note to Allison today, full side of two father’s day cards last month, full length letter on paper… likely to my brother when he was in rehab or prison, maybe 4 or 5 years ago?

Favorite kind of sandwich? Varies. I quite like falafel, or a good grilled cheddar on wheat.

Best thing to eat for breakfast? Split an omelet and pancakes with Allison is a perennial favorite.

What is your usual bedtime? Weekdays, about 11-11:30 pm. weekends… maybe an hour or two later.

Are you lazy? I’d call myself lazy. I’m trying to be more industrious though.

How many languages can you speak? I’m fluent in English, Pig Latin and gibberish. I can find a bathroom, count a bit and order food in Spanish and German.

Are you stubborn? I can be, though I’m generally easygoing.

Are you afraid of heights? Not unless I’m being pushed out of a plane or something.

Do you sing in the shower? Sometimes. Today was a mashup of Gilligan’s Island incidental music and John Denver’s “Sunshine. ” shameful. I am a stereotype.

To be continued. And now, Ben Grimm and a squirrel.
